0 0 O Q) Americans Safe in Cuba, Castro Asserts College Enrollment Increases in State Eugene IUPII An overall increase of 17.8 per cent In ' freshman enrollment at Ore gon's s t a t c-supported col leges was reported today by ; Chancellor John R. Richards of the state system of higher cdiicatftn. Total enrollment figures were placed at 23,033 so far, with the figure expected to I approach 25,000. Last fall's final total was 23,260. Breakdown by schools showed: ' . Oregon: Enrollment 12.3 per cent ahead of . last year ; at 7,314. Freshman cnroll , ment 2,023. Oregon State: Enrollment I. 8 per cent up with total 7,543 and freshmen 2,122. Portland State: Enrollment II. 3 per cent up with 4,198 and freshmen 1,370. Oregon College of Educa tion: finrollmont 10 per cent ,up with 1,042 and freshmen 389. Eastern Oregon: Enrollment 10.2 per cent up with a total 801 and freshment 277. Southern Oregon: Enroll ment up 7.8 per cent with to tal 1,271 and freshmen 440. Oregon ?ch: Enrollment up 2 per cent with total 755 and freshmen 287. The dental school was up 4.5 per cent but the medical school was down 2.9 per cent. . Citizens Said Not Blamed for Errors Of Government Havana-UIPD-Premier Fidel Castro assured Americans in an unscheduled midnight tele vision appearance early today that they would be safe in Cuba. Khrushchev To Visit He also announced that So viet Premier Nikita Khru shchev was "definitely com ing" to Cuba but that "it is not yet known when . . ." and that United Arab Republic President Gamal Abdel Nas ser would be coming In March. Rejection of a new protest note from Washington by Cas tro's government strained re lations between Cuba and the United States almost to the breaking point. Castro declined to comment on the note and said, "Notes from the embassy are now routine things. They do not merit any comment."
