Re publican candidate Nixon. - I think all of us who watch ed it and listened to it will agree that BOTH were VERY GOOD indeed. It was touch . and go irom the beginning : Neither knew what the other -might fire at him. Both displayed re markable knowledge of all the political maneuvers of the past. Their knowledge was intimate and detailed, indicat ing close and careful prepara tion for the job they are tack' ling. ' There can be little doubt that both are capable young men. ". TOU were interested, of course. Otherwise, you wouldn't have listened in. Let me ask you a personal question: If you knew last night : which one you were for, did what was said and HOW it was said change your alle giance? If you were undecid ed, did what was said and ' how it was said change your uncertainty to definite sup- port of one or the other? TiERHAFS I'd better answer - my own question. Person ally, I have had (and still have) the feeling that neither . will hesitate to spend money or to unbalance the budget if ; he feels it is necessary to do so. r But- I have had (and still have rafter listening to the debate) the feeling that Mr. Kennedy, -if elected, will spend more and will hesitate less about budget imbalance than Mr . Nixon. So (feeling that reck- less spending will be very dangerous in the years to come) I'm still for Mr. Nixon. THAT seems to have been the general reaction. The ; Associated Press made a quickie survey after the de- . bate, questioning 100 people in ten cities from coast to coast. This was the result: . Almost twice as many of those who said they were in fluenced thought Kennedy made a better showing than Nixon. Most of these, how- ever, said they had FAVORED KENNEDY previously and were reinforced in their opin ion by the debate. Those who leaned to the belief that Nixon .made a better showing in the debate also previously favored him. Of the 100 persons ques tioned, 65 said the debate had not changed their opinions at all. Of the 35 AFFECTED by the debate, two definitely witched from Nixon to Ken nedy and 21 said the debate influenced or REINFORCED a preference for Kennedy. No one said he had switched from Kennedy to Nixon and 11 said "the debate influenced or RE INFORCED a preference for Nixon. One person said he had switched, but refused to disclose which candidate now liad his allegiance. THAT is to say: If this tiny sampling (which was made IMMEDI ATELY after the end of the debate) has any significance at all, it indicates that Mr. Kennedy came out of he first debate a shade ahead, v ' There will be three other debates. It will be interesting to note how they affect pre vious preferences. INEVITABLY, these debates (there will be four of them altogether) call to memory the famous Lincoln-Douglas de bates 102 years ago. ' . There were seven of them. THERE WAS THEN NO RA DIO OR TV. Their impact was limited to those within ear shot of the speakers. That rep resented a tiny percentage of ihe total population of that day The four I960 debates will be heard and watched by A VERY LARGE PERCENT AGE of our total present pop ulation. Discussion of the Lincoln-Douglas debates will have to wait, : Innocent Verdicts Given in Portland Portland - (UPD - A Circuit Court Jury Wednesday re turned innocent verdicts for five Portland persons charged In connection with B-July 16 disturbance at the Jim Dandy drive-in restaurant. Sheriff s deputies arrested the five defendants after call ing for reinforcements to halt what they termed an incipient riot. Witnesses claimed the depu ties used improper methods in making the arrests. Deputies claimed the defendants resist ed arrest and attacked three officers.
