Newspaper Page Texto o o o Losers Get Good Gains On Ground Iowa City, Iowa -IUPD- Iowa needed every step of its back field speed Saturday to down upset-minded Oregon State, 22-12, and start Coach Forest Evashevski on the road to successful final season. It was Larry Ferguson who provided the extra step of speed as he raced 85 yards for a touchdown in the fourth pe riod to give the Hawkeyes an insurance margin needed to quiet the nerves of 43,000 partisan fans. Ferguson raced down the sideline after taking a hand- off from quarterback Wilburn Hollis, pulled away from sev eral would-be '.acklers and then turned on everything he had to just get over the goal line with a frantic Beaver safety man grasping at his shoes. Game Closer Than Score The touchdown gave Iowa its 10-point winning margin, but the game was much closer than the score indicated. Much of the drama of the contest was jammed into the last quarter as Iowa was forc ed to blunt a pair of deter mined bids by Oregon State, which last week pulled a stun ning 14-0 upset at the expense of Southern California. The win launched Evashev ski's professed last season as head coach on a winning note, but the game also raised some cause for alarm. Oregon State was able to dent the Iowa defense on which Evashevski said he was basing his hopes for a good Big Ten season, for a total of 312 yards, 222 of it on the ground. Iowa used a set of lightning fast backs to grab 323 yards on the ground and added only 56 in the air. Sophomore fullback Joe Williams was the workhorse, carrying the ball 11 times for a net gain of 71 yards, including one 13-yard burst In the opening' period which set up Iowa's first touchdown. Atones For Error Hollis passed six yards to end Bill Perkins for that open ing score. Tom Moore missed the point-after try, but aton ed for that error by kicking a 24-yard field goal with only nine seconds gone In the sec ond period to give Iowa a 9-0 lead. Oregon State, which looked anything but upset-able In the first half, came out after the intermission and with about eight minutes gone had cut Iowa's margin to only three points. Halfback Don Kasso swept around right end for nine yards, one play after a double reverse had picked up 27 yards to put the Beavers in scoring position. It was the season opener for Michigan and platoon-conscious coach Bump Elliott threw a steady rotation of hard-driving backs into the game that kept the Oregon defense off balance all after noon. Elliott's best offensive weap on turned out to be Glinka. But Glinka had to share the laurels with at least five oth er backs who methodically punched holes in the Oregon line. Halfbacks Dave Raimey, Denny Fitzgerald, Bennie Mc Rae, Jack Strobel and full back Ken Tureaud all starred for Michigan. Off and Running It was Raimey, another sophomore; who got the Wolv erines off and running in the opening period when he slic ed through tackle and raced 25 yards for the first touch down. The sudd en scoring thrust came midway in the period and capped a 56-yard drive. That was the only touch down of the first half al though Michigan continued to dominate the action and threatened twice in the sec ond period by moving inside the Webfoot's 10 yard line. Michigan's running attack temporarily stalled, Glinka ball on the Beaver 48. Four plays later, Capt. Jerry Mau ren raced five yards for a touchdown and Moore's con version made the score Iowa 16, Oregon State 6. The stage was set for Fer guson's Insurance score about five minutes later when, with four seconds left in the third period, the Beavers' fullback Mike Kirby dove over from inches away to cut Iowa's mar gin to only four points. The Cavemen of GP goaled on a 27-yard run by Dan Mc Intire in the first quarter and Larry Janssen kicked the ex tra point. This 7 to 0 margin stood up until Don Austin ended a fourth stanza drive for Marshfield with a one ward push for a score. Bob Lewellyn passed to Janssen for 36 yards to make the GP lead again seven points at 13 to 6. Marshfield then took the bail and charg ed on a 70-yard promenade to the goal. Wylie Smith was the workhorse on the drive but the pay-off was a 39-yard pass play, Fred Loffer to Gary Craybaugh. Austin bucked the extra point to deadlock the game. Marshfield led in first downs 13 to 9 and in net yards from scrimmage 217 to 125. Grants Pass "ran out of left halfback" in the tiff. Ray Meek did not suit down be cause of an ankle ailment. Tom Hathaway started but was hurt and replaced by Mc Intirc, who in turn was In jured. Meek then suited up and made an appearance and Fred DcBo saw service at the spot. Main SP 2 912 Casper Nabs Portland Open Lead Portland, Ore. - OJPD - De fending champion Bill Casper Jr., of Apple Valley, Calif., took over the lead in the $27,500 Portland Open Golf tournament Saturday with a six-under-par 66 for a 54-holo total of 201. Casper pulled ahead' of the midway leader, Don January of Dallas, Tex., who came in with a 70, for a 14-under-par figure of 202 for the three days. Tied with January was Bob Roseburg of Overland Park, Kan., who shot a 69. Half of the reduced field of 64 pros and 10 amateurs fractured par despite playing in the rain until mid-afternoon. Only Mason Rudolph, Clarksville, Tenn., the first day leader who shot a 71 yesterday, complained of the downpour. He wears glasses and they tended to fog up. Masters and U.S. Open Champion Arnold Palmer of Ligonier, Pa., stayed in strong contention with a 67 and a three-day total of 203, only two strokes off the pace. He needs the $2,800 first prize money here to break Ted Kroll's all-time single season money-winning record. Palmer now has $70,566 com pared to Kroll's $72,835. Tied with Palmer was Paul Harney of Worcester, Mass., who posted a 68. Doug San ders of Miami Beach, Fla., and Len Woodward of Syd ney, Australia, shot a 66 and a 69, respectively, today to tie for sixth. Rudolph was all alone in seventh place with 205. Casper stayed even or bet ter with par all day, scoring three birdies on each side. Tornado Gridders Flatten Red Bluff Spartans 46-0 Medford High school's rag ing Black Tornado, whirling into California on Friday night, unleashed a rampag ing and glittering exhibition of Oregon prep football for the Golden State. Lashing out with their high geared ground assault, striking through the air and turning three Spartan aerials into Medford touchdowns, tile Tornadoes smashed Red Bluff 46 to 0. Tall end Bob Quinney, half back Mike Hood and 'ulloavk Dan Sicg each accounted for two touchdowns and copter Stan Smith ran for one. Dan Miles booted four extra points. Medford, scoring on the opening scrimmage play of the evening, led 13 to 0 by the first quarter's end. Then, when a Medford defender batted a pass into the air, Duck Pin Plan To Be Repeated Portland - The successful "Bucks for Ducks" pin plan inaugurated last year in Ore gon will be repeated again this year, according to Bob Bishop, slate chairman of Ducks Unlimited. The pins, selling for one dollar, are again available in sporting goods stores through out the state Money raised goes to the non-profit Ducks Unlimited organization which spends more than $500,000 a year to rehabiliate waterfowl breed ing grounds in Canada. Fed eral law prohibits the use of duck stamp funds outside of the United States. "If it wasn't for the fine work of DU, especially during these past two drouth years in the Canadian breeding grounds, our shooting season and bag limits undoubtedly would have been reduced more drastically," Bishop said. A short opening kick-off by the Spartans backfired as Medford took possession of the ball on its own 49-yard line. Quarterback Dick Rags dale threw to Bob Quinney next on a 51-yard scoring play. Run Called Back Red Bluff, which tried to capitalize on its passing threat through the night, was forced to punt shortly after the Medford kick-off. Rags-, dale took the ball on the Med ford 35 yard line and revers ed to Hood. The Tornado screen formed and Hood went 65 yards to the end zone. But clipping at midfield nullified the gallop and the penalty put the ball back on the 35 yard starting point. Three line plays with Phil Humphreys toting took the Tornado to the Red Bluff 35. i There, Hood got the ball on a : reverse, cut over the center of the line and zipped to thei TD stripe.
