William Curtis Backes Miss Day Is Bride Of Navy Man Miss Ruth Marie Day, 1025 Court street, became the bride of William Curtis Backes, 308 East California street, Jacksonville, in a cere mony at West Main Church of ' Christ September 3. The Rev. Rosse V. Long officiated at the 7:30 o'clock ceremony at tended by more than 60 rela tives and friends. The bride is a daughter of Mrs. Wallena Day, 1025 Court street, Medford, and Grant Day, Central Point. Mr. Backes is a son of Mrs. Ruth Lathringer, Hawthorne, Calif. and Arthur Backes, 308 East California street, Jacksonville, White and purple gladioli decorated the church for the ceremony. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a floor length dress of Alencon lace over taffeta. The sweetheart neckline was embroidered with pearls and sequins and the full tulle skirt had an overskirt of scalloped lace. Her fingertip length veil of silk illusion was held by cap of lace embroidered with pearls and sequins.. She car ried a bouquet of white car nations encircling red roses. Miss Mary Elin Burkhart Central Point, was maid of honor and Miss Teresa Thora man was bridesmaid. They wore pink and white frocks with tiered skirts and car ried pink and white carna tions. Glenn Backes, Central Point, served as best man for his brother. Seating the guests were Roscoe Day, brother of the bride, and David Neet. Following the ceremony a reception was held at the home of Mrs. William Wen dell Bateman, 1657Vi Kings highway. Mrs. Edith Pitts, Portland, grandmother of the bride, cut and served the wed ding cake. Mrs. Charles Green, San Francisco, aunt of the bride, presided at the punch bowl. Miss Charlotte Green, cousin of the bride, was in charge of the guest book. The couple traveled to southern California and visit ed Disneyland on their wed ding trip. For traveling the bride wore a white suit with white accessories. They are making their home in San Diego where the bridegroom is an airman in the U.S. Navy. He was graduated last month from the Aviation Ma chinist's Mate school at the Naval Air Technical Train ing center, Memphis, Tenn. The bride attended Crater High school. Mr. Backes is a graduate of Jacksonville High school. Couple Leaves For Washington Mr. and Mrs. Dick Clark left Thursday to make their home in Raymond, Wash., aft er visiting here with Mr. Clark's parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Clark, 625 Park street. The young couple was mar ried in July at Roseburg. She is the former Donna Schulze, Roseburg. He recently return ed from t h e Mortimer L. Schiff Scout reservation, Mendham, N. J., where he completed a six-week course in professional scouting. The young man will serve as district Scout executive in Raymond and surrounding area. He was graduated from Southern Oregon college last June and had worked at Lake of the Woods Scout camp for several summers. Tea Announced For Candidate A tea honoring Dr. Edwin Durno, Republican candidate for the U. S. house of repre sentatives, will be held Wed nesday, October 5, at the J. C. Boyle home, 2336 Ross lane. Mrs. S. Ralph Dippel will serve as hostess. Anyone Interested li invit ed to attend the event and talk with the candidate. Tea will be served from 2 to 6 p.m. i mm'L Ami First Fall Meeting Held by Gardeners Cave Junction-The Illinois Valley Garden club held its first fall meeting at the Im manuel Methodist church Fri day, September 23. Mrs. Harry Floyd was mod erator for a panel discussion on "Winter Storage of Sum mer buids" and "Bulbs for Indoor Blooms." Hostesses were Mrs. Ray mond Heidenreich, Mrs. Luci us Robinson, Mrs. George Thrasher and Mrs. James Hogue. Couple Lives In Grants Pass Ashland - Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Lee Arnold are mak ing their home in Grants Pass following their wedding at Trinity Episcopal church, Ashland, August 14. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archibald Martin, 1313 Nevada street, and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Arnold, Box 45, Pitt Star Route, Butte Falls. The Rev. Duane S. Alvord officiated. Attendants' for the bride were Miss Maureen Brabec, Vancouver, Wash.; Miss Glen na Brewold, Medford, and Miss Joyce Arnold, Butte Falls. The bride wore a tradition al wedding gown of Chantilly lace over taffeta and carried a white orchid on a Bible. The bride is a junior at Southern Oregon college and her husband was graduated from SOC last June. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Nelson, route 1, box 324, Central Point, and the bridegroom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bollweg, Clackamas, Ore. The Rev. John Ilg read the double-ring nuptial mass at 12 o'clock noon before a small number of relatives and friends. Arrangements of pink and white gladioli dec orated the altar. The bride was given in marriage by her father. She wore a traditional wedding gown of lace over satin, with fitted bodice, long sleeves and a scoop neckline accented with pearls. The skirt was bouffant, with chapel train. A crown of pearls held her finger-tip veil, and she car ried a white bouquet of min iature roses, carnations and an orchid. Attendants were Miss Ju dith Nelson, sister of the bride, who was maid of hon or, and Miss Judith Whaley and Miss Karen Wolk-Lan- iewski. They wore white lace gowns over taffeta, with pas tel cummerbunds and match ing small veiled hats. Their bouquets were of pink carna tions. Another sister of the bride, Stephanie Nelson, was flower girl. She wore a frock of Patricia Greb, Richard Davis Wed in Areata Central Point-Mrs. Alelha Gertrude Greb, 737 Laurel street, announces the mar riage of her daughter, Pa tricia Ann, to Richard E. Davis, Areata, Calif. Their wedding was an event of Sat urday, September 17, in the Areata Presbyterian church. The bride, a graduate of Medford Senior High school, attended Southern Oregon college and is teaching in Eureka, Calif. The bride groom attended Michigan schools and is employed by the United States government at Areata airport. The newlyweds are making their home in Areata. Among those attending the wedding were Mrs. Greb and the bride's sister, Mrs. Ellis Feinstein, Medford. To Dedicate Rose Garden Jacksonville - Dedication ceremonies will be held at 3 o'clock this afternoon at the Jacksonville Old Rose Gar den, across the street from the Jacksonville museum. Speaker for the occasion will be Mrs. Daniel Heffner, Portland, Pacific Northwest director of the American Rose Society. It is believed that the gar den is the first in the United States c'voted exclusively to old fashioned roses. The public is invited to the dedication. A reception was held at Girls Community club, where a buffet luncheon was served to about 30 guests. Pink and white asters decorated the tables. Mrs. Malvin G. Leverette, Santa Maria, Calif., the bride's maternal grandmother, cut the wedding cake. Mrs. Walk er Shaw, Phoenix, was at the punch bowl. Miss Judy Wha ley and Miss Karen Wolk Laniewski were at the gift table and Miss Judy Nelson was in charge of the euestl book. The young couple traveled to Phoenix, Ariz., on their honeymoon and the bride groom will attend electronics school there. Both the bride and bridegroom attended Crater High school. Coming from out-of-town for the wedding, in addition to those taking part in the ceremony and reception, were the bride's grandfather, Mal vin G. Gordon, Central Point Garden club member, at the regular meeting of Shady Cove Garden club this month. She displayed dahlias in Mexican colors. Mrs. William Sheppard gave a talk and demonstration on the cycle bloom of flowers. Guests at the meeting in cluded Mrs. Robert Bishop, Mrs. Verta Bradley, Mrs. Wendell Stalker, Mrs. E. Terry Cooper has enrolled as a freshman at Sacramento City college, Sacramento, Calif. He was graduated from St. Mary's High school last June. He participated in foot ball and track in high school, winning letters all four years in each sport. Prior to leaving for college, the young man assisted his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Cooper at the House of Mys tery at Oregon Vortex, Sar- Women's Group Plans Luncheon The monthly luncheon and business meeting of Kiwanian Dames will be held at 12 o'clock noon, Tuesday, Sep tember 27, at the home of Mrs. Glenn Branlund, 48 South Barneburg road.
