More serious yet, however, is the fact that Chile s search abroad for a half-billion dol lars in relief credits also has halted abruptly. Chile must first put its economic house in order before seeking aid abroad. The government describes its political opposition in the Congress as including Com munists, Socialists and Chris tian Democrats. EATON Washington IUPII - Back Stairs at the White House: The up-roar over which presidential candidate's wife spends more (or less) on clothes underscores the rela tively non-controverfial ward robe of Mrs. Mamie Eisen hower. The First Lady, in contrast to Mrs. John F. Kennedy, buys strictly American de signs so far as dresses are concerned. She often shops by reading the Sunday papers and calling the store the next morning if something appeals to her. Those who know Mrs. Eisen hower say she sometimes buys a frock for under $10. Her propensity for buying cos tume jewelry in five-and-dime stores is well known. Of course, the First Lady has some very expensive gowns. She has heavy social obligations as hostess to vis iting royalty and heads-of state. Next Tuesday, for ex ample, she will entertain at a state dinner for the Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko of Japan. The First Lady likes hats, bright colors and dark stock ings. ' No one at the White House, however, cared to in ject Mrs. Eisenhower into a political quarrel by estimat ing how much she spends a year on clothes. James C. Hagcrty, an avid New York Yankee rooter, is enjoying the last laugh on re porters who chided him when the Yankees were far lower in the American League standings than they are to day. The President's press secretary went to New York last week end to cheer his team to victory in a crucial series with the Baltimore Ori oles. With this extra bit of White House backing, the Yankees won four straight. Dewey Long, the White House transportation chief, has a new interest - raising African violets. He carried one of his plants through the White House lobby the other day - mystifying visitors. " ' He was identified as Frank Thomas Pratt.. The coroner's office said the body had been in the water about a week. Death was apparently due to drowning. IUPII - The Supreme Court and Circuit Courts are making excellent progress in disposing of the backlog of cases in Oregon, Chief Justice William M. Mc Allister of the Oregon Su preme Court told the Oregon State Bar Thursday. He said dockets were being I brought to a "current posi-j tion. The improved status, he said, has been brought about despite the fact that there were 877 more cases filed in Circuit Court in I960 than in 1959. In the Supreme Court there were 222 cases ready for argument on Jan. 1, 1959, and this 'number has been re duced to 81, he said. Six Months Time Seen McAllister said the Ameri can Bar Association has said that Circuit Courts which are functioning properly should be able to dispose of the aver age civil case about six months after filing. He added that the 31 coun' ties in Oregon in which law section quarter of 1960, the age of the median cases in 13 of the counties was six months or less, in the next 13 counties the median age did not exceed five months and in only five counties was the median age more than 12 months. Charles S. Rhyne, past president of the American Bar Association, said this country's reservations on world court jurisdiction must be repealed "if we are to ef fectively lead the world to ward the rule of law among nations. Multnomah Coroner Decision Awaited Portland - IUPD - A decision is expected next week on whether the name of Dr Ernest J. Loslt will be allow ed on the November ballot as Republican candidate for Multnomah County coroner. Three circuit Judges will sit "en banc" Monday morning to hear the case. Dr. Dos 1 1 was selected as the Republican nominee for the position at' an Aug. 23 nominating convention. He was named after a mixup in nominations for the post and insurance man Hugh Laccy was declared ineligible for the Republican nomination. La- cey apparently had won the Republican nomination in the May 20 primary by virtue of a write-in vote. A suit questioning Losli's candidacy was filed Sept. 8 by attorney Thomas Mahoney in behalf of the Democratic coroner candidate, Dr. Earl Smith.
