Leather Apparel
Reflects Splash
In General Wear
Nature's own bright splash
of color is reflected in the
new leather apparel fashions
for daytime, casual, and eve
ning wear this fall.
There are glove-soft cow
hide, cabretta, kldskln, colt
skin, suede and calf leathers
In bright rusts, vivid reds,
soft blues and greens, and a
whole range of more subtle
neutrals such as grcigs, tan,
beige, bone and white.
These are seen in smartly
tailored tunie suits, or skirts
teamed with three quarter
length jackets richly lined in
a complimentary hue or pais

The three-quarter length

neutral suede colors and sooty
charcoals, as well as golden

Leather teams with cash
mere, tweed and knit for
warm wear in the brisk days
ahead. New two-piece suits
feature leather Jackets with
skirts of tweed or knit. Often
the jacket carries through the
fabric motif, with the leather
shown in the back of the jack
et and repeated on the fabric
yoke, and collar and cuffs.
For dressy occasions, there
are short leather dressmaker
jackets with fur collars, to
wear with evening sheaths.
Teamed with silver fox, many
dressmaker jackets are inter
preted in softest kid or ante
lope leather.
Full length evening coats
in coltskin appear in flatter

plum, deep purple, and rich
green to enhance classically
simple sheath gowns.

EASY DOES IT
Long but easy Is the line
to fashion - as seen In the
many tunic and long-torso
styles. . . ,.
Youngsters Aware Of Clothing Styles
Young boys are becoming
clothing conscious at an in
creasingly early age. Today
such terms as "Ivy" and "Con
tinental" mean -as much to
little brother as they do to
Dad. Clothing manufacturers
are making it easier for every
youngster to get the styles he
wants.
. This fall he can choose
suits from a modified Conti
nental all the way to the
three-button natural shoulder
style.
Among coordinates, solid
color blazers are Important
fashion notes. Patterned jack
ets show madras coloring,
plaids and checks.
Vests some reversible
compete for favor in wool,
velveteen and corduroy.
Bulky sweaters make news,
with shawl collars, high V
nccks and crossover boatnecks
as style setters.
Ivy shirts, especially the
pullover placket model and
the topcred shirt with neck
band and shirtalls, are popular.
FORMAL WEAR LEADER
The season's big formal
wear leader is the shawl col
lar tuxedo. Peaked lapel mod
els are catching up, however.
Lapel trim is in satin for the
most part.
People's Apathy
To Polio Vaccine
Disappointing
Washington (Science Serv
ice) A substantial increase
in the number of reported
cases of polio has led Sur
geon General Lcroy E. Bur
ney of the U.S. Public Health
Service to say he is dis
appointed by people's apathy
concerning available polio
shots. For the week ending
Sept. 3, a total of 210 cases,
of which 116 were paralytic,
was reported.
"The Salk vaccine has
been available to the public
long enough that most of
these cases should not have
occurred," the Surgeon Gen
eral told Science Service. "At
times such as this I have a
keen sense of disappointment
that people have not taken
full advantage of preventive
measures against serious dis
eases. "Sometimes it is apathy;
sometimes a fear of the
needle. In very few cases can
we say the reason for not
taking polio shots is econo
mic," he said.
Not Sure of Acceptance
Asked whether the new
live poliovirus vaccine to be
licensed soon for oral use
would be accepted by the
public, the Surgeon General
said he was not sure.
"I hope so," he said. "But
getting large groups of peo
ple together even for health
reasons is always difficult if
put on a voluntary basis. If
the new vaccine is to be ef
fective the cooperation of the
medical profession, the pub
lic health departments,
nurses and communities in
general," will be required.
Even smallpox, diphtheria,
typhoid, malaria and other
preventable diseases are still
not completely wiped out,
mostly because of people's in
difference. The week's report omits
Nevada, Florida and Missou
ri from the polio list.
Pro-American Forces Encircle Capital of Laos
Bangkok, Thailand-IUPII-The
revolutionary forces of pro
American Gen. Phoumi Nosa
van reported Tesuday they
had encircled Vientiane, ad
misitrative capital of the
troubled kingdom of Laos.
Phoumi, who rebelled
against the government of
Premier Prince Souvanna
Phouma earlier this month
after charging Souvanna was
pro-Communist, ordered citi
zens of the capital to remain
clear of strategic areas in the
city.
The revolutionary leader
claimed his troops were pre
paring to take the capital
away from a paratroop bat
talion, under the command of
Capt. Kong Le, which seized
control of Vientiane in a light
ning coup d'etat early last
month.
Appeal To Troops
Phoumi, who heads the mili
tary committee of the revolu
tionary government proclaim
ed by Prince Boon Oum, made
a radio appeal to troops and
police in the fight against
Souvanna's government.
Some reports indicated that
Communist Pathet Lao troops
under the indirect command
of Prince Souphanouvong,
Souvanna's half-brother and
so-called "Red prince" of Laos,
had joined government forces
and were prepared to meet
Phoumi's troops if they at
tack. A spokesman for the revolu
tionary government, Col. Boon
Kong, reported that Commu
nist forces which invaded
Sam Neua Province border
ing on Communist North Viet
Nam, were being opposed by
troops loyal to Phoumi.
