': "At first, the engineers wouldn't allow it since they said we didn't have any ac cess to the park," the mayor explained. "But now we have two sidewalks on either side of the overpass which extends Depoe st. over the railroad tracks. Besides that we have just completed a pipeline from the river to the city near the park site and we would naturally have access to that'- . The state highway depart ment has approved the gift as recommended providing the city relieves -the state of any responsibility for any ac cidents, fences the plot and maintains.it as a park. Leyen said money for benches and picnic tables would come from the city's park fund. Stolen TV Set Found; Repairs Unnecessary Huntington, W, Va.-Thieves broke into T. V. Pennington's car and stole his portable television set, which was on the blink and being taken to a repair shop. Police arrested the thieves a short while later and Pen nington reclaimed the set. It was working fine. Deadline Hears For Applying for Hyalt Lake Sites Less than two weeks re main for interested persons to file applications for five re creational homesitcs at Hyatt lake, according to Ross A. Youngblood, Medford district manager of the bureau of land management. Eighteen Hyatt lake tracts were classified in 1956 for recreational homesite use, he said, but five lessees failed to construct required improve ments and those tracts will be available at a drawing at 10 a.m., Sept. 27. The drawing will be con ducted by the manager of the Oregon Land office, 809 NE Sixth ave., Portland, to whom applications are to be submitted. Rental Noted Rental for each of the tracts is $62 per year, and ad vance rental for two years plus an application service fee of $10 must accompany applications. All payments submitted will be returned to unsuccessful applicants for the Hyatt lake small tracts, a c c o r d ing to Youngblood. Tracts are about three-fourths acre in size and are on the lake front. The five tracts are the only ones classified for recreation al homesites that currently are available for leasing n the Medford district, he said. Leases In this case will be for 14 years, subject to renewal. Five years will be allowed for construction of suitable improvements. Improvements on the 13 tracts that are now occupied vary considerably in style and construction, but all pro vide their owners with re creational diversions from 44 ' y . Two Camps Open In Dead Indian Area of Forest Ashland - Two new forest service camps have been opened in the Dead Indian area about 27 miles from Ash land, according to Ashland District Ranger Harold (Red) Thomas. , Thomas said both camps were completed earlier this month and predicted they will get plenty of use when deer hunting season opens next usual occupations, Young blood said. Beaver Dam Creek camp is located about 25 miles up Dead Indian road and another VA miles north of the Fish Lake turn. Daley camp is sit uated about one-fourth mile north of the first camp. Facilities at Camps Each camp has five tables, five stoves and five parking spots, but Daley is consider ably larger in area, Thomas said. Crews worked during Au gust, Thomas explained, to develop a spring above the first camp and then laid 2,400 feet of plastic pipeline to pro vide drinking water at both camps. The spring itself is three feet deep and two feet in diameter. Signs have been placed at each campsite, and Thomas said numerous campers have used the facilities since they were completed just before the Labor Day week end. Headqiartersfor Demo Group Opens Henry Padgham, general chairman of the Jackson County Citizens for Kennedy- Johnson committee, with headquarters at 122 East Eighth St., Medford, has an nounced the appointment of Mrs. Inez Friel as headquar ters chairman. Volunteer . support has al ready begun, he said, and Mrs. Friel and her assistants are scheduling workers for duty both at the headquarters and for outside activity. A Veterans - for - Kennedy committee organized earlier and a Rcpublicans-for-Kenne- dy movement have also ap peared to offer supplementary help under the "Citizens for Kennedy" leadership, he said. While the headquarters is already open, a formal open ing will be held when Con- gresswoman Edith Green of Portland, State Chairman for Kennedy-Johnson, visits Medford, Padgham said. At that time the Citizens for Kennedy - Johnson, Jackson County Democratic ' Central committee and the Eleanor Roosevelt League will com bine in holding a tea for Mrs. Green.
