The award, or iginally presented at the Tuesday Rotary club meeting, is in recognition of outstand ing civilian service, coming through the of fice of Secretary of the Treasury Robert B. Anderson. The wood in the frame was taken from the platform from which Eisen hower gave his original inaugural address. Leonard is associated with Leonard Elec tric company, Medford. Dr. Dickson To Continue Studies Dr. John P. Dickson, Med ford dentist, is planning to take further education at the University of Oregon dental school soon so he may teach and conduct research. While in Portland, Dr. Dick son hopes to obtain a master of science degree in children's dentistry. While attending the university school, the local dentist will be teaching part time and working at Doern becker hospital. Dr. Jack Lusk is assuming Dr. Dickson's practice. Dr. Dickson's office space has been leased to Dr. Robert Fry. Dr. Dickson began his prac tice in the same building with Dr. Mary Jane Fowler. In 1954, he and Dr. Eugene G. Ray decided to build an office at 1117 East Main st. Dr. Dickson is on the Ore gon state board of dental examiners and is active in the Methodist church, United Medford Crusade, the Rotary club and is past president of the Jackson County Dental Society. Cabinet Shop In CP Is Burglarized Some miscellaneous articles and small change were taken during a burglary of the Cen tral Point cabinet shop in Central Point Friday night, Central Point police said. Police reported articles taken included a transister radio valued at $60 and $3 in change. Thieves broke open the door on the north side, police said. County Youngsters Are Invited to Join CAP Jackson county boys and girls are invited to join the Medford - Civil ' Air Patrol squadron's cadet training pro gram, according to Lt. John Keener, squadron command er. The training includes cours es in aviation education by Air Force reserve instructors, photography, radio and com munications, meterology, search and rescue procedure, first aid, model airplane building and mechanics. A new four-week course has been added in basic survival, Keener said. Survival kits will be assembled for storing in the home for emergency use. The outstanding cadet dur ing the next nine months will receive a flying scholarship. The cadet staff under Cadet Lt. Don Huntcmarin form their own command with the Civil Air Patrol seniors act ing as advisors. Cadets learn military courtesy and drill. It offers an aviation program designed for air - minded youth. Meetings are held ev ery Monday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the CAP building at the Medford airport. UMC Funds Make Up 30 Per Cent of Clinic's Budget "It is harder to be a good parent now than it used to be," according to Tom Goil, psychiatric social worker for the Child Guidance clinic-. The community supports a Child Guidance clinic because there are children and fam ilies who need the help avail able. United Medford Crusade funds make up 30 per cent of the budget for the counsel ing and diagnostic work. In a mobile nation, most families are without the per iphery of relatives and friends that formed a second family wall for our grandparents or parents, Goff said. Since the community cannot supply the personal security it used to, it now finds new ways of helping its citizens, and among these is the Child Guidance clinic. . . , The average child will change schools five times in the course of his educational career. That means new ad justments and strains, making new friends, meeting n e w! standards, Goff noted. For those who show signs of great unhappiness there should be a place where families can go for help. Problems Cited Among the problems that bring the families to the clin ic, Goff cited inability of the child to make friends, under achievement at school, with drawal or rebellion at home. "The children have less dif ficulty than their parents in coming about their problems," Goff said. No child becomes a patient of the clinic without his parent's consent, or with out the parents participating in at least the first interview. "We don't give advice Goff said, "but we try to help parents work toward a more satisfactory arrangement for their family." UMC Supports Clinic UMC has helped support the clinic since its formation in 1953. Since then, 600 chil dren and their parents, ap proximately 100 a year, have sought help. Children can be referred by teachers, doctors, public health nurses, neighbors; but they must come with the par ent's consent. During the last year, the clinic has made plans for ex panding its services to take in family counseling. They are now recruiting another case worker to enable them to counsel families where the primary problem is not that of an unhappy child. "Family counseling will have to wait until we get a new case worker," Goff said, although the clinic has receiv ed many requests already. Library Patron Gives Free Advice Atlanta - A woman report ed she was sitting in the pub lie library when a man, some what the worse for whisky wandered in. He sat down at a table and began thumbing through birth and death statistics with grow ing concern. "Do you know," he blurted to a distinguished looking man sitting beside him, "that every time I breathe someone dies?" "Very interesting," was the reply. "Why don't you, try chewing cloves? Airport Traffic Shows Decrease Both passenger and air craft traffic at Medford's mu nicipal airport during Au gust were down from the to tals during the same month in 1959, according to Airport Manager Gil Gutjahr's monthly report. Passenger traffic last month totaled 6,288. This was up from the previous month's total of 5,584 passengers, but below August, 1959's total of 8,099 passengers. A total of 5,517 airplanes of all kinds landed at or took off from the airport last month. This is compared to the previous month's total of 6,736 flights and the 5,991 flights recorded during Au gust, 1959. Air freight was also down, as was air express. Some 15, 888 pounds of air freight were handled at the airport during August, compared to 37,573 pounds the previous month, and 26,966 pounds during the same month in 1959. Air express totaled 3,117 pounds last month compared to 3,429 pounds in July and 4,758 pounds in August, 1959. Total revenue received at the airport during August was $3,160, including $522 in landing fees. ARREST FIVE SPIES Bonn, Germany -HOT- West Germany Friday announced the arrest of five persons ac cused of operating a Soviet spy ring. The interior minis try said the ring received its orders direct from the Rus sians and did not work for Communist East Germany as many agents do. Cancer Recheck Is Scheduled Here A recheck of Jackson coun ty families enrolled in the six-year canctv prevention study of the American Can cer Society will get underway Oct. 1, according to Mrs. Walter G. Garner, Medford, Jackson county cancer drive chairman. Completion is set for Oct. 31. When the long-range study started a year ago, 933 fami lies and 1,731 individuals in the county were enrolled. They provided confidential in formation about their health histories and personal living habits to help society re searchers determine why some people get cancer and others do not. The questionaires were sent in scaled envelopes to New York headquarters of the American Cancer Society. Purpose -of the local re check, which Is part of a na tional program, is to find out how many deaths have oc curred among participants of the survey in the intervening months and how many were caused by cancer. A similar recheck will be made each year.
