Watkins Mr. Turkey is Wildest, Wiliest Game Bird The descriptive word 'wild really means something when applied to the wild turkey, for this, the largest of Ameri can game birds, is the wildest and wiliest, and probably the most intriguing of them all. Because of its natural wild ness, the wild turkey, unlike its relatives the peacock and the pheasant, are relatively scarce in densely populated areas. As the land is cleared and settled, the wild turkeys disappear. Isolation, from man and all his works, is as neces sary to this majestic bird as IS Jood, water and shelter. By careful inbreeding, there Radiation May Be Factor in Multiple Sclerosis Chicago - (Science Service) Radiation bombarding t h e earth from space may be a factor in the occurrence of multiple sclerosis, the Har vard University neurologist Dr John S. Barlow believes. He told scientists here today of a world study linking the chronic disease with the amount of cosmic rays reach ing areas of the earth. Dr. Barlow spoke at North western University's medical school here during an inter national symposium on the re sponse of the nervous system to radiation. This is the first symposium of its kind ever held anywhere. Severe Crippling Multiple sclerosis, a disease known for more than a cen tury, results from degenera tion of the sheath-like cover ing; that surrounds nerve fi bers in the brain and spinal cord. It often causes severe crippling. Cause of degener ation is not known, and there is no specific treatment. tr. Barlow's statistical study of the distribution of multiple sclerosis shows that the; frequencies of occurrence of", the disease vary systemat ically with geomagnetic lati tude. The intensity of cos mic radiation is the only phenomenon known to be re lated to geomagnetic latitude. Therefore, Dr. Barlow said, the possibility arises that cosmic rays might, in some way, be a factor in occurrence of'.the disease. Rare in Orient It is much more common in-'the northern parts of Eu ro'pe and North America than in"the southern areas; and it is;extremely rare in the Ori ent, South America, Africa, the tropics or subtropics. .Other scientists have sug gested that the mystery of the distribution of multiple scler osis might depend on the amount of radiation from the sun or trace elements in the soil. If, after further research, positive links are found be tween cosmic radiation and incidence of the disease, Dr. Barlow said, protection may pa; effected by chemical agents "known to lesson bio logical effects of ionizing radiation." Device Computes Direction of Hurricane Waves College Station, Tex. -(Science Service)- A fast, accur ata method of forecasting hurricane-caused storm waves, the biggest killer wtien trop ical storms hit the mainland, has been developed at Texas A. and M. here. the method gives more re liable estimates of the period, height, and place and time of " contact of storm surges caused by hurricanes and other-meteorological conditions. Spells Direction Pr. Basil W. Wilson, pro fessor of engineering ocean ography at Texas A. and M., said an IBM 704 computer has been used to spell out the di rection of attack, the height of the wave at any given point along the fetch line, the ve locity of the wave crest, the rate of change of the wave action as the hurricane prog resses, and the rate of move ment. Since the information re quired to calculate these fac tors is not available while a hurricane Is in progress, Dr. Wilson proposes to plot a number of previous hurri canes, then store these models "in the computer. As a new hurricane developed, data on it -would be fed to the com puter, which would auto matically match up the new hurricane with one in its memory having the most sim ilar characteristics. 1 have been many strains of turkeys created, some that weigh three or five times what any of their distant ancestors ever weighed. Lay Eggs in Spring The wild hen turkey, as wary of her enemies as her dignified husband, lays her eggs in the early spring. Her lord and master, the irnhhlor does none of the work of nest ouiiaing, or incubation. The big. lazv ealoot is off galivanting somewhere with his male friends, and he won't show up again until the fol lowing spring. He won t even recognize or protect his wife or offsrjrine. even if he meets them face to face. He's a callous and un principled character, but he is good eating. There are usually 10 or 12 eggs in the nest. After hatch ing, the young turkeys stay with the mother throughout the summer. As the fall comes, wild tur keys gather in flocks, move across wide areas seeking weed seeds, acorns, and all those juicy insects that wild turkeys like to eat. In the south they feed on cypress balls. Offtimes these flocks contain only hens or only gob blers. When the hunting seas on starts, the flocks are scattered. Majestic Bird The wild turkey is a majes tic bird; wary, alert, and dif-. ticult to find. Like all the tribe, the gobbler has a pe culiar tuft of feathers hang ing from his chest, and like the domestic varieties, the head is bare, blue in color, ana almost covered with orange-colored warts. The suc cessful wild turkey hunter must be a careful stalker or an expert "caller." The reed-caller in the hands of an expert accurately dup licates the voice of a turkey; it is intended to lure the bird within gunshot range. The call, emitting from this reed instrument, does not represent the "love call," it more or less represents the "rallying call." It fools the turkey: he or she thinks a group of friends are trying to "get together." It is a 'vhite whistle of truce," which backfires on the turkey; he loses his life be cause he falls for a false promise." A false voice often misleads both men and tur keys. (Released by The Register and Tribune Syndicate, 1960) Small Intestine Segments Used To Repair Bladder Los Angeles-(Science Serv ice) - Damaged portions of the urinary tract can be repaired by using segments of the small intestine. A team of urological sur geons at the university oi California Medical School, Los Angeles, headed by Dr. Willard E. Goodwin and in cluding Drs. Rodericl. Turner and Chester Winter, have em ployed several surgical tech niques using loops of small intestine (ileum) to repair ravages of disease or injury in the urinary tract. In one such procedure the piece of intestine is used to repair or enlarge a damaged bladder. A "cup" is formed from the loop of small in testine taken from the patient. The bladder is then opened and the cup is sewn to the bladder, becoming the dome or top portion of the bladder. Capacity Restored Thus capacity of the blad der, which has become limit ed through disease or injury, is restored to near normal, and the patient is greatly relieved. Another procedure utilizes the intestinal segment to re place a damaged ureter (the tube which drains the urine from the kidneys into the bladder). Use of intestinal segments In urological repair is not a brand new concept, Dr. Good win pointed out. This type of surgery was tried and aban doned more than 50 years ago. Only in recent years has it I received renewed attention. These pr cedures have been used successfully in approxi mately 50 patients at UCLA.
