S. Air Force Jet bombers collided in flight over the At lantic Ocean today. One plunged Into the sea, presum ably killing its crew, but the other limped safely to Shan non airport with a dangling engine. British and United States rescue craft sped to the scene but officils said there was little chance any crewmen survived the crash. Flying in Formation The two planes were B47s- six-englne turbojet bombers They were flying in formation with a third B47 when the col lision occurred about 250 miles off the west coast of Ireland. A B47 normally car ries a crew of three. Capt. John Brennan of Evansville, Ind., managed to pilot his crippled plane to Shannon with the undamaged plane escorting him. A spokesman at the Pitts burgh, N. Y. Air Force base said the two bombers that col lided were en route from Plattsburgh to England as part of a normal "deployment ex ercise" at the time of the ac cident. Vanished Into Seas "After the accident it ap peared that the other aircraft went into a whirl and vanish ed into the rough seas below," urennan said. In London, officials of the Transcanada Airline said it re ceived six messages from a civil airline reporting that two planes had collided and that one was ditching in the sea. Plattsburgh officials said the planes were unarmed. The planes are the same as the type shot down last July over the Barents Sea bv So viet fighters. Swimming Team Transfers Its SwimtoYMCA Medford's -municipal swim ming team has transferred its "300-mile swim to Portland to the local YMCA this week due to closure of the city's swimming pools. The team, which is swim ming the 300 miles within the confines of local swimming pools, has undertaken the "her culean" task as a means of keeping in shape throughout the fall and winter months. Ahead in the marathon at the first of this week was Ted Lyons, 18, son of the munici pal swim coach, Ken Lyons, who has so far swam 18V4 miles of the necessary dis tance. Each of the some 40 mem bers of the team are attempt ing to swim the 300 miles in their leisure time before the swimming competition begins next year, Lyons estimates that- the journey will take from four to five months to complete. Under YMCA Auspices During the fall and winter months the team will be swimming largely, under the auspices of the local YMCA and will compete in some eight to 10 swim meets that will be held throughout the state during the off-season months. The team is working out three nights a week at the YMCA; on Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 9:30 to 11 p.m. Lyons says that all persons who are interested in swim ming for the team should turn out at these practices. Boys and girls of all ages are eligi ble, he said. Team members wll have to attend at least two of the three practices to continue team membership. Salem Girl Hurt When Hit by Auto Salem - fllPD - Debra Marie Pierce, 7, Keizer, was struck by a car Tuesday night in front of her home and drag ged for a distance before the horrified eyes of her parents. The child was described in critical condition with mul tiple injuries. Attendants at Salem General hospital today reported, her slightly Im proved. State police Identified the driver of the car as Gerald C. Woock, 17, Salem. He told officers he didn't see the girl until his car was upon her, Debra's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Pierce, were in their yard when the accident occurred, The girl was on her way to the corner grocery (tore to buy let cream. Albert D. Rosellini and Lloyd J. An drews were matched in the Nov. 8 general election today after the Republican chal lenger rolled up a landslide victory over State Rep. New man Clark in Tuesday's Wash ington primary election. With 4,788 of the state's 5,182 precincts, more than 90 per cent, reporting, Andrews had outpolled Rosellini while swamping Clark by a majority of nearly 85,000 votes. Andrews' total was 233,932, Clark had 149,180.
