Richard, 13, and Tom, 11, say the major problem that occurred in the . process of building the vehicle was con necting the "second half" to the "first half", via the third wheel. The forked bar con necting at the wheel core was designed for a front wheel and didn't fit properly. Other wise, the arrangement operates with "fairly good ease". Shown (below) modeling the vehicle are (second from left) Marilyn Barker, 14, and Christine Semple, 12. The youths live in the 600 block on South Holly St., Medford. Reports say the girls were al ways using the boys' bicycles, so the "me chanics" decided to construct for them another means of transportation. The tan dem, complete with two seats and three wheels, is made from two girl's bikes. Rich ard said it was orginally his father's idea, but the "kids" decided to build it. Although it is "pretty easy" to operate, use has been reserved for "going to the store" and "hav ing fun," not for riding to school. A special "swivel" addition in the middle allows con trol when turning. They say it took only a day to build "Bloody Mary," named for its bright red color. So far as they know, it is the only one of its kind locally. Durno Defines Congressman's Job Rogue River - Speaking on "The Role of a Congressman" at the Grange hall here Fri day night, Republican con gressional candidate Edwin R. Durno defined a congressman as "an agent between' the people of his congressional district and Washington, whose function is to pay at tention to the wishes and recommendations of the peo ple, and have a vast knowl edge of their problems." Durno described the "poor condition" of the Brookings harbor and of the south jettys of the Siuslaw and Umpqua harbors as "examples of ne glect." He warned that lumbering, "this number one industry in Oregon - today and for gen erations to come is being threatened from two sides." Besides areas being cut too fast to maintain a sustained yield, he said, "there are near ly a million acres of wilder ness in danger of being 'ice boxed' forever by being turn ed into a permanent primitive area." He added that some of it is bug-infested and should be cut, allowing for new growth. "I am not against national parks, but they must not con flict with the economy of this state," Durno declared. Flegel To Head Porter's Campaign Eugene - Al Flegel, Rose burg, has been appointed chairman of Congress man Charles O. Porter's campaign committee, according to an announcement from Porter's office. The Eugene Democrat is seeking his third congression al term. Flegel stated, "Porter has represented the district ably In his two terms and I am happy to work for his r.e-elec-tlon." Flegel was mayor of Rose burg from 1946 to 1952 and has served two terms in the Oregon legislature. He Is now candidate for state senator. t Veterans Schedule Candidates' Night Veterans of World War I, Medford Barracks 540, will sponsor a meeting Nov. 3, al lowing both Republican and Democratic candidates to dis cuss political issues. Pat Graham, 175 Jeanctte St., Medford, has been named chairman of the project. At the meeting, candidates run ning for city, county, state and national offices will be invited to participate. Reports say a similar event four years ago drew a "standing-room-only" crowd to the auditorium of the Medford Labor temple, 24 i South Grape st. Graham urges those interested to arrive early to assure a good scat. The animals were trucked up Thursday night from Salem. Prices were up over 1959 prices for hogs but cattle and lamb levels were below last year. Top price for a prime steer was $26.50 a hundred weight. Last year the top was $29.50. At that, prices for 4-H stock averaged about 50 cents per hundredweight above current Portland market quotations. S. and J. Meat company, Portland, bought the entire lot of 56 market hogs paying a top of $19 a hundredweight.
