SEPTEMBER 7. 1968 Radiation Use Requires Experts Washington, (Science Serv- ' ice)-A serious deficit exists in the number of experts be ing trained to cope with pub lic health and safety prob lems accompanying the rapid ly expanding use of radiation of various kinds in the Unit ' ed States. Surgeon General Leroy E. Burney of the Public Health service warned recently that by 1070 at least 4,000 addi tional physicians, engineers and physicists trained in ra - diological health and protec tion measures will be need ed. This means that colleges and universities should be ad' 'mitting at least 600 candi dates annually for such train ing instead of the 200 now being trained each year. The Surgeon General said that nearly half of the 4,000 additional experts needed would be employed by indus try as it expands its use of nuclear power, of X-rays and isotopes.
