He had Ed Barnett of KBES-TV and Dick Jew ett of the Mail Tribune as his ' guests to the Oregon Bowling Proprietors associa tion' press party there, given in appreciation for sports editors and other of press media. ' MAJOR LEAGUE POSSIBILITIES .'''.'. Guest speaker, . Whiter Harris, spoke at the dinner on the prospect of profes sional bowling teems on major league basis. They would compete in proposed arena type areas for spec tator participation. Harris, formerly bowled on the Budweiser team from St. Louis and is on the Bruns wick, Balke, Callander Co. 'staff of champions. He has turned his talents to writ ing for sports publications. A major league for bowl ers Isn't a too distant pos sibility. College level bowl ing is getting to be quite popular - with their own lanes on campus. A mem ber of a college bowling team is protected much like lhe football players. He can not bowl on a league other than the college team. SUMMER LEAGUE The . Washout league fin ished its summer season led by the Awkward Five's 38 wins, 18 loses. TOURNAMENT SITE The Gateway Lanes in Port land with 34 lanes will be the site of the 20th state tour nament for men next Febru ary and March. Medford is planning a determined bid for the 1962 tournament bid ding against Roseburg, Grants Pass and Klamath Falls. Ray Wise, state secretary wants to emphasize to the men that bowlers .are classified by average so that a man with 160 average doesn t worry about the 200 average bowl ers. Class A is for all those with a 180 average and bet ter, class B for 170-179 ave rage, class C for 160-169 ave rage and class D for all un der 160. The men's association is well represented by Gene Piazza as Medford's member on the state association's board of directors. DEPOSIT BOXES Since our local bowling program encompasses just at 60 leagues and has a membership of over 1200 men and 1000 women, it will not be possible to give adequate coverage for all on just one day each week. Henceforth; the bowling publicity will be given space in one other issue, most probably Sunday, as well as the current Thurs day issue. There have been deposit boxes set up at each alley for the convenience of the publicity chairman oi each league. pas-the SOC Needs Back Who Can Pass Ashland- We need a ser, is the cry from Southern Oregon college foot ball camp as It prepared for the opening session next Tues day. Raider coach Al Akins lost his two senior quarterbacks last year when Lance Locke and Jack' Brown graduated. Frank Ballard appeared- to be the gridster who would step' in and take up the slack, but an injury this, summer eliminated him from the role. "Here we have the surest fingered end in the North west in Gordie Carrigan and no one to throw to him, continued Akins over the lack of a signalcaller with college experience. Akins did reveal that he plans to try John Buck and Bob Jensen along with new comer Dave Hughes. Buck has been a defensive back while Jensen is in his second year at SOC after having quarterbacked Mapleton High school. . Hughes is tall and fast in addition to. having a strong arm. Other than a quarterback, we should have a well tried first unit in. most of the po sitions except possibly one end and the center spot," the Raider mentor added as he scanned the returning list. Akins got back to his fa vorite subject of Carrigan's ability to hang onto the fly' ing pigskin under all condi tions. "We know that most clubs will be laying for Gor die, and will often times dou ble team . him," Akins said, but remember the Eastern Oregon game last year when he caught three touchdown aerials with two and three defenders hanging on." Carrigan was named to the Oregon Collegiate conference team and the NAIA all-district team. He received hon orable mention on the all coast All-Amerlcan team by virtue of his 37 receptions for SB0 yards. Althouah-Aklns is high on Carrigan, He said Willie Gar- nerQ not to be overshadowed by any means. Garner was a tackle last year on offense and a line backer on defense in gaining his berth on the OCC: all-star team and men tion on the NAIA district sauad. "Garner is perhaps one of the greatest linemen ever to come out of Southern Ore gon," reflected Akins, "his soeed and strength hits and overpowers opponent! before they can figure tne piay.
