Douglas (D-Ill.) has aid that Democratic presiden tial candidate John F. Ken nedy should go to the people and denounce "the unholy co alition" of Republicans and southern Democrats in Con gress, .. Do u g 1 a s said Kennedy should purely lay the blame on the two groups for the failure of Congress to accom plish much during its current thort session. - He also advised Kennedy to openly call for the coalition to be "broken." Douglas voiced his views In a radio interview with a panel of newsmen which in. eluded William Theis, chief of the Senate staff of United Press International, 'Political Lots' The Illinois senator said the bobtail congressional session has been a "political loss" be cause of obstructionism and negative votes by Republicans and Dixie Democrats. . "But the Democrats of the north and the west will get the blame," he predicted Douglas said he was sur prised that Senate Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson, the party's vice presidential 'candidate, and Speaker Sam Rayburn did not foresee this would happen. "It's their . baby," Douglas added acidly. ' He said 18 out of 22 south ern senators voted for a scaled-down medical care for the aged bill, after first op posing Kennedy's own plan. "And I think It Is also 17 out of 22 who voted against foreign aid, and 16 out of 22 voted against an adequate minimum wage bill," he said. Douglas said Kennedy could tell the American peo ple' during the campaign "that the power of this coalition should be broken." "I think' It. is possible," ho said, "that a strong president with the power of patronage and the power of appoint ment might be abl to get a Teal liberal majority. We do need a few more Democratic scats, however." Douglas snld Tie thought the defeat: of Kennedy's medical aid proposal to put the pro-' gram under the social sccuri ty tax Is "going to hurt him Without question." Douglas snld the blame for failure in this Instance and others "should be pinned by responsible people. on this un holy coalition of an almost solid south with an almost solid Republican party . , , "And. very frankly, I don'l think the Democratic party can long tolerate. having this condition exist.' I think it's clear the south does not want to belong to a national party." Should Raviss Rule - The senator said Congress Should revise its present rules which give the chairmanships of key committees to those who are on the "seniority totem pole," mostly southern ers. "One of the first things we need to do is to put in as chairmen of these committees only those who really support the program of the national party," Douglas said, "and not select those as chairmen who sabotage that program and who oppose the national, can didates and give only lip-service to them." , Douglas said he thought it would be "fine" if southern Democrats left the party and became Republicans but he said he knew they wouldn't. "The Republican party has unfavorable connotations be cause of 'reconstruction and the Civil War, so they're re luctant to leave," he said. "They cling like - well, I will not say leeches - but they cling like birds to the Demo cratic party." Diane Baker Jumps From 'Sweet Young Thing' Roles Right Into Bathtub Scene By JOE FINNIOAN UPI Hollywood Correspondent Hollywood (UPD Diane Baker has jumped from the "sweet young thing" roles straight into the bathtub usu ally reserved for scrccnland'a glamour girls, She'll still be sweet though, but also a little better scrub bed up when she emerges from the suds in "The Wizard of Baghdad." "Sure, I'm going to take a bath." said Miss Baker as she stood alongside a tub which had a sort of cloth shower curtain around It, wheels and a handle. The whole contrap tion resembled a baby car riage. What's the intrigue about taking a bath in a movie scene?" she asked, looking at group of males gathering on the set, Sicln-Colored Leotard I'll be dressed in a skin colored leotard and wouldn't wear less. Nobody ' will see anything." Diane plays a Persian prin cess opposite Barry Coe, a role that s a far cry from the part of Anno Frank's sister in "The Diary of Anne Frank." "Baghdad," a spoof on the world of All Baba, is Diane's first comedy, and entirely dif ferent from her past movies. "I think comedy is the hard est thing in the world to do," she claimed. "I'm not good at it yet, but will be." Taking a slap at actors who Insist on tearing their hair out before a heavy dramatic scene, Diane said It was non sense. "You know how some act resses go into a big emotional thing before a scene," she asked. "I say you should learn your lines the night before and forget about it. Drains All Energy ' Then, go to work (lie next day, crack a few jokes and do the scene. The torture of those emotional buildups before a scene drains all the energy you need for acting." Miss Baker rebels at being identified as an ingenue usu ally found standing around in many Hollywood films with seemingly nothing to do. "I'm not ; ingenue and couldn't be Sundra Dee," she Insisted. "People say I'm such a 'nice girl' which is silly and so general. By that they mean I'm just sort of 'there' In a picture." The 22-ycar-old Miss Baker has made only four pictures and wishes she had started out in the legitimate theater be fore entering films. Storied Backwards' "I think I'll probably end up doing some stoge work," she said, adding that "I prob ably started backwards. 'Movies are harder to act in," she said. "I could have picked up some experience doing stage work before." Diane is nudging her studio, 20th Century Fox, for per mission to do a play. I think I could convince the studio it would be best for both of us that I do a play," she said. "Studios want better pci formers and if a play can help me, they should approve. 'I'd .never quit pictures though. It's the greatest source ot intimate communication with the whole world. TV isn't. There's nothing good in it except a few shows." Diane thinks there might be a little Insecurity among film folk, including some top stars, who duck a stage performance. When I hear people say they can't afford to go back on stage because they're mak ing too much money, it makes me angry to s them give in," she concluded. "I think they're frightened."
