Chico, Calil and Stewart Schroeder ant" Eddie Simmons, Medford, yes terday headed a contingent of some 120 golfers who played their qualifying rounds for the 32nd annual Southern Oregon tournament at Med ford's Rogue Valley Country club. No qualifier was sub-par. Mitchell, ex-Chico State col lege divoter, stroked an even-with-course standard 72 to pace the bid for 63 champion ship flight berths in the men's division. Schroeder, currently njember of the Oregon State cpllege team and last year's medalist here, was right be hind with a 73. Simmons, six tfmes winner in the Southern 0,regon, stroked a 74. Marvin Clark, Grants Pass and RVCC, tabulated 75 to lad advance qualifiers in the senior men's division of which lie has been twice champion. Mrs. Helen Davies, Medford, spven straight times a titlist in this tourney, had Tuesday's low women's card, 79, three oVer ladies' par. patches Thursday Around 260 visiting con testants were scheduled to qialify today as the tourna njent got into full swing. Match play begins on Thurs day in this Rogue Valley links classic. Finals will be on Mon day, Labor Day, with finalists in . the men's and women's championship brackets going 3t holes and those in the sen ior men's 18. All three of last year's champions will defend their diadems. They have chosen to take automatic No. 2 seeded spots in their respective titu lar flights. The defenders are Bob Prall, Salem, in the nien's, Karl Bennett, Grants Pass, in the seniors, and Miss Betty Martin, Longview, .Wash., in the ladies'. The three will have the top positions in the bottom brackets of their flights. Championship flights 'will have 64 players in men's play and 16 each in seniors' and women's. Following Simmons in yes terday's men's qualifying were Joe Hallmark, Roseburg, and Carl Schmidt, RVCC, with j75s. Jim Sheldon, of the home Jlinks, had a 76. Mitchell was one-over-par on his front nine with a 38 and one-under with 34 on the back side. Schroeder had 39 34 with an eagle three oh No 18 hole. N It was reported that Phil Underwood, Waverly, Port land, declared a 74, fired Mon day in National Amateur qualifying, as his Southern Oregon qualification score Dick Yost, Columbia-E d g e- water, Portland.- declared his 76 in the Monday Portland play. 1 - Players Practice A couple of Rogue Valley's top players were in the over 80 group yesterday and could miss the championship flight participation unless scores of today's qualifiers are high. Alan Holmes had an 81 and Dr. Bruce Stanley an 82. A good number of visiting players had practice rounds over the Medford layout yes terday. Match play on Thursday will be for all entries except in the women's fourth and sixth flights and men's second through fourth. They go into matches on Friday. The ladies eighth and 10th flights and the men's 10th through 14th will play at Ashland's Oak Knoll links on Thursday. It's a chance for fresh air, exercise and fine entertain ment. There is no admission charge. Your presence with spec tators along the fairways and around the greens will give one the Rogue river valley's top sports attrac tions a boost. RVCC and tourney officials welcome galleryites. For they con tribute substantially to tour nament success. The 32nd annual tourney at the Medford links runs from today through Sept. 5 with more than 400 divoters to contend in men's, wo men's and senior men's di visions. Match play starts on Thursday, Sept. 1. Finals in all three divisions will be on Monday, Labor Day. Some of the West's finest golfers will display their skills and battle for the championships. Lesser lights will tussle in lower flights for trophies and for fun. The spectacular and the unexpected can happen in any of the flights. There's a real holiday mood at the Rogue Valley course during the Southern Oregon's duration. The tour nament has developed a tra dition of sociability and top golf. Hedrick Grid Checks Friday Coach Barney Riggs has issued a reminder to pro spective Hedrick Junior high footballers that phys ical examinations will be given on Friday evening. Physical checks for the grid aspirants will be at 7:30 p.m. at Medford Clinic, 1025 East Main st. Each boy who plays football must have an exam. A nominal fee of $1 is being charged for the Friday check. .' Riggs has asked ninth grade boys to report Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. or on Saturday from 9:30 to' 1 1 a.m. to get their foot ball equipment. Ninth grade practice will begin on Sept. 6. Seventh and eighth grad ers will not turn out for football until after school begins.
