Washinglon-ttlPII-A State De partment document showed today that a former Boston University professor and war time intelligence officer, Dr. Maurice H. Halperin, is now behind the Iron Curtain "working for the Soviet gov ernment." . . The document was pub lished in the Congressional Record at the request of Sen. Keating (R, N.Y.), a member of the Senate inter nal security subcommittee. The State Department said there are indications that Hal perin is now advising the Rus sians on Latin American af fairs. Halperin was suspended and later fired from his university teaching job in 1353 because he refused to tell Senate inl gestigators whether he was ever a member of the Commu nist Party. During World War II, Hal perin was in charge of the Latin American division of the Office of Strategic Serv ices, an intelligence unit. Renewed Passports The State Department said Halperin and his wife, Edith, appeared at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow July 15 and pre sented their U.S. passports for renewal. At that time, the depart ment said, Halperin told offi cials he was employed by the Soviet Academy of Sciences to do "research" on under developed countries. The department report said Halperin is "something of an authority on Latin American affairs." "Our information indicates that this probably is the field in which he is working at the present time," the department said. It said Soviet Academy of Sciences "is directly sub ordinate to the Soviet Coun cil of Ministers." In Russia Since 1958 Halperin told embassy offi cials that he and his wife had been in Russia since Decem ber, 1958, the department said. .The department said Hal perin slipped into Russia from Mexico after obtaining airline Storage Capacity Of Willow Creek Reservoir Larger The storage capacity of the city-owned Willow Creek res ervoir was increased by 1,000 acre feet of water Monday with tlie completion of a proj ect to raise the reservoir end of the spillway. Total storage capacity of the reservoir is now 8,000 acre feet. The increased capacity was gained by raising one end of the spillway three feel. Pet rehn and Purdy Construction company, Central Point, did the work for the city under a S3. 176 contract. City Water Superintendent Robert Lee said the increased storage capacity was neces sary for two reasons. They are, to make sure the reser voir has enough water to last through the driest of sum mers; and to assure storage carry-over from one year to the next. Meets Obligations The Willow Creek reservoir is maintained by the city to meet its water obligations to the Eagle Point Irrigation dis trict. Both the district and the city share the water rights on the Big Butte Creek system -the city's source of water- with the city s share being the smallest at 23.5 per cent. When the city exceeds its percentage of water from the Big Butte system, which it does every summer, then it must make it up to the irriga tion district. The water de partment does this by main taining the reservoir and re leasing its water to the irri gation district in an amount equal to the amount of water the city uses from the Big Butte creek system over its share. During the hottest days of the summer the amount to be released to the district from the reservoir can get quite high, according to Lee. He said that during the first week of this month the amount of water going to the district from the reservoir reached 2 acre feet a day. Oregon Girl, 7, Still Missing Eugene - IUPII - The search for a seven-year-old Dexter, Ore., ,girl, Alice Louise Lee, missing since Monday morn ing, failed to turn up any thing Tuesday. ; The youngster, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest E. Lee of Dexter, disappeared at 10 a.m. Monday while picking beans with her family at Trent, 20 miles east of here. The Lane county sheriff's office said that it used blood hounds and dragged parts of the nearby Willamette river Tuesday. A sheriff's office spokesman said there was no reason yet to believe any foul play took place. Alice Louise disappeared after telling her mother "I'm going to put my doll and things with the lunchbox." The lunchbox was near where the family was picking beans. Search for the girl contin ued today. reservations "in the name of another person."
