6 B "HERE is EVERYTHING ADVANTAGEOUS in LIFE." Shakespeare's The Tempest.. .Use the Classified Ads! SP 2-6141 TUESDAY, AUGUST 30, 1960 p?fn Small Worlds wii Arund Us I: v3rtjl By Lynn M. Watkins Swansdown About Perfect Ai Insulating Material The list of materials man has used to insulate buildings refrigerators, thermos bottles or clothing against heat, cold or sound, is almost endless. In the long and varied list arc such things as glass, stone, fibres, wood and porcelain, as well as a cushion of air. Some are good, but none arc perfect. Clothing itself is a form of Insulation. Those who spend a great deal of time in cold climates must have adequate insulation to keep their body fluids from freezing. When feathers are added to fabrics, almost perfect insulation be comes possible. Feathers and fur seem to be very close to the perfect ma terial. On the mammal or bird the fur or the feathers keep out the cold as well as insulat ing the body against the heat. 'Swansdown' All of which points up a very important fact. With all of man's inventive ability he has never come very close to equaling the insulating quali ties of natural materials. The soft under-feathers of the swan comes about as close to perfection as a feather could possibly get. Real swans- Flights Increase At Local Airport Total landings and lakcoffs at Medford's municipal air port during July were up from last year, but passenger traf fic was down, according to Airport Manager G. J. Gut jahr's monthly report. Some 6,736 flights used the airport last month compared to 5,889 the previous month and 5,914 during July, 195D. Passengers numbered 5,584 during July, below both last month's total of 5,305 and the total of a year ago when 7,700 passengers were recorded. Of the 6,736 flights record ed at the airport last month, 920 of thorn were regularly scheduled flights of the three airlines that serve the airport -United, West Coast and Paci fic Air lines. Express totaled 3,429 pounds during July compared to 3,632 pounds the previous month and 4,468 pounds a year ago. Air freight totaled 37,573 pounds, up from last month's 20,224 pounds but below the 45,845 pounds total of July, 1959. Airport revenue during July totaled $4,210, including $843 in landing fees. 'Dollars For Durno' Gaining Momentum "Dollars for Durno" is galn 1 n g momentum throughout Oregon's fourth district, it was reported today, three weeks after the fund-raising drive started for Republican congressional candidate Ed win R. Durno. Local women's committees throughout the seven counties of the district are setting up coffees, bridge and canasta parties, and other social gath erings. Mrs. Lester Adams, Apple gate, vice-chairman of the Durno for Congress commit tee and director of the drive, stated that the campaign had met with enthusiastic re sponse. In the Mcdford area, Mrs. Earl Lawson, Mrs. C. Rease Bralcy, and Mrs. Chester Guchcs are among local wom en participating in the cam paign. Lawyer 1st To File For New Judgeship Salem - IUPI1 - Tennis S. Wire, Hood River attorney, is the first candidate to file for the newly created district judgeship in Hood River coun ty. Wire's petition with 335 aames was received by Sec. State Howell Appling Mon day. Hood River has gained the new district court because lis population has reached a point where one is automatically created. Billy Graham Predicts End of the World Zurich-iUPII-Evangelist Billy Graham told an audience of 15,000 Sunday the end of the world is near. Graham, who warned the fame thing three days ago in 2ern, said many things fore tell the end of the world. . "Jesus Christ will come loon and all of us should gel ready," he said. down is no softer nor finer than eiderdown, the under feathers of the cold water eider duck, who spends most of its life in ice cold water and is very comfortable at the same lime because of the "down" under ils contour feathers. Even the name "swansdown" indicates its ex treme softness and lightness. On the body of a bird as large as a swan there natural ly would be a great amount of genuine swansdown. The chickens, as well as most other birds that do not immerse themselves in cold water, are short of down. There is less need for the insulation where extreme cold is not encoun tered. So we never hear of "hensdown," or "t u r k e y down." Strange enough, neith er do we concern ourselves with "goose-down," although geese really do have the pro tection of "down," under the contour feathers. Near Perfect Nothing man has ever de veloped has come very close to down as far as insulating goes. Also the feathers of ducks, geese and even chick ens come pretty close to a per fect material for pillows. Even after being crushed by heads pressed heavily against them for long intervals of time, the feather pillow snaps back or can easily be "fluffed up" by a few sharp shakes. The old-fashioned feather bed of grandmother's time was about as soft as a body-pillow could possibly be. So far it has never been duplicated for warmth or softness. The baby duck sleeps in a feather-bed; the cygnet sleeps the warmest, easiest and cosiest of all-it sleeps in "swansdown."
