It's all a matter of finding a way to spend less than you earn. Mil lions of people have discovered a good way to do just that. They use the Payroll Savings Plan to buy U. S. Savings Bonds. Under the Plan any amount they choose is set aside from their pay for Bonds. This makes saving very easy because they've found that the money they don't touch is money they're sure to save and can't dribble away. You save more than money with U.S. Savings Bonds ILLUSTRATION BY OSCAR LIEBMAN My Mother Saved My Life A near-miracle teaches a boy the meaning and strength of love By CHARLES TROTTER as told to John M. Ross IT was A quiet but busy Sunday at our home in Tampa, Fla. Mom was helping my stepfather, Maxwell Rogers, with the heavy bookkeeping involved in his work as a newspaper circulation manager. My sis ter, Patricia, who's 10, was playing with her friends next door, and I was working on our station wagon in the back yard. When I became old enough to apply for my junior driver's license, I made an agree ment with my parents. For permission to drive the family car, I promised to wash and lubricate it regularly and do other maintenance jobs. It was a good deal. Like most 16-year-old fellows, I really love to putter around a car. That afternoon we were planning to do some fishing off the Skyway Bridge, where trout and sheepshead were running big. While I waited for my parents to finish their work, I decided to grease the car. To work on the universal joints, I had blocked the front wheels and jacked up the rear. My job was going along nicely until I jerked the wrench while trying to tighten a nut. The sudden jolt caused the jack to slip from under the bumper, and in the next instant the car pinned my right leg to the ground. Pain shot through my body like a bolt of lightning, and I cried out for help. Little Patricia and her friends, who were nearby, ran into the house, screaming. Mom Family Weekly, August 28, 19G0 and Dad came on the double. Dad, sizing up the situation quickly, did what any aver age man would do he went for the jack, knowing it was the only way to lift the car. Mom is a licensed practical nurse, hardened to crises, but now she was almost hysterical. Hearing my screams, she reacted desper ately. Without waiting for Dad to reset the jack, Mom simply grabbed the bumper with both hands and lifted. The car rose! I pulled out my leg and scrambled from under the car to safety. "Are you all right, son?". Mom gasped, her face strained with pain. I started to answer, but Mom collapsed. At the hospital, X rays disclosed that Mom had broken her back in saving me. The tremendous strain of lifting the car had caused a compression fracture, with one vertebra crushed. Luckily, there was no paralysis, and the doctors said that after six months in a brace Mom would be as good as new. Strangely enough, I received only a few minor cuts and bruises. Of course, it's a well-known fact that the body is capable of superhuman feats in an emergency. But in lifting a 3,300-pound car, Mom amazed even the medical experts. For one thing, Mom, who stands about 5-feet-7, weighs only 123 pounds. She's not only slim, she's not particularly strong. In fact, for two weeks just prior to the acci-
