It is anticipated that the new license arrangement will stimulate considerable more activities in the radiation re search program at Oregon State, according to Dr. C. H. Wang, chairman of the radiation safety committee. Granting of the AEC li cense indicates that OSC is doing significant nuclear re search and that it has become a "big business" on campus. Research Programs Currently, the 44 research programs in progress, asso ciated with ionizing radia tion, amount to a total an nual expenditure of $650,000. Six of these are supported by the National Science Foun dation. In addition, there are 38 projected programs in the area of physical science and biological science directly re lated to the use of ironizing radiation with the total cost estimated to be $392,000 an nually during the next five years. Radioisotopes have been used by college scientists as a versatile tool in various areas of research endeavors such as piston-ring wear, plant and animal physiology, insecticides, herbicides, bac teria phage, animal nutrition, and biochemical research. Present Programs The present instruction program consist of 13 $1.4 Million Approved For Green Peter Dam Washington (UPD A House Senate conference committee agreed, Friday on a sum of $1.4 million for Green Peter dam in Oregon. The money was included on a multibillion dollar public works spending bill for proj ects in every state in the coun try. The proposed Green Peter dam, long sought by Oregon congressi onal members, would be located on the San tiam river. courses designed for the training of personnel in the fields of nuclear physics, ra diochemistry, radiotr acer chemistry, and radiation bi ology. This new license will cover the entire radioistope pro gram on the campus. Prior to the present time, the use of radioislopes on the OSC campus was carried out un der individual by-product li censes issued to research per sonnel directly from the AEC. Expansion of the radioiso topes necessitated the change from individual licenses to a broad AEC license. Under this license, quali fied staff members will be able to produce and use any radioisotopes bearing atomic numbers 3 through 83 for use in research and instructional programs. These radioisotopes are by-products from the re actor operation at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tenn. OSC purchased a $165,900 nuclear reactor last year with a grant provided by the Atomic Energy commission to train nuclear scientists. Nixon Likes Kennedy, Kenedy Likes Nixon Seguin; Tex. (UPD- It looks like Nixon will vote for Ken edy in the November gen eral election, and there's a good chance that Kenedy will vote for Nixon. Stan McKenzie, a radio newsman, conducted a poll In both Nixon and Kenedy, 'lex., about the presidential elec tion. The towns are located 36 miles apart in south Texas. McKenzie said he found that Sen. John F. Kennedy will be a shoo-in among vot ers in Nixon, while voters in Kenedy appear to favor Vice President Richard Nixon by a slight margin.
