Detroit-IUPD - Nitrogen Too owned by Samuel Du Pont of Wilmington, Del., and driven by Ron Musson, outran the field of seven on the Detroit river Saturday to capture the 15th running of the Silver cup. The Du Pont boat's sister racer, Nitrogen, driven by Normal Evans, swept to a tic for second with the favored Miss Thriftway, owned by by Willard Rhodes of Seattle and driven in the race by Bill Muncey. Wild Bill Cantrell driving Gale V owned by Joe Schoen- 1th of Detroit appeared to wash out in the final heat and did not finish. Gale V was In contention until the next to the last lap of the heat as Cantrell battled Muncey for second position and a shot at the leading Nitrogen Too. They appeared to be wash lng each other on the turns and in the fourth lap of the three-mile course Gale V was left dead in the water on the second turn. Miss Buffalo Last Miss Buffalo, owned by Chester Hardt's syndicate and driven by Bob Schroeder, was the final finisher as Thunder bolt, another Detroit boat owned by George Zigas and driven by Waler Kade, failed to finish. Such Crust, Detroiter Jack Schaefer's boat driven by Leo Macutza, broke down on the second lap of the fourth heat and did not run in the final. By points Nitrogen Too racked up 1100 for finishing first twice and second in her third heat. Musson posted the Southern Entries Exceed For the first time in the history of the Labor Day holi days' classic at Rogue Valley Country club here entries in the Southern Oregon Golf championship exceed the 400 mark. Co-Chairmen Darrell Miller and Bill Clark this week re ported a total entry of 418 men and women for the 32nd annual tournament. This field Includes 272 in the regular men's division, 93 in the la dies' and 53 in the senior men's. The Southern Oregon for mally opens next Wednesday, Aug. 31, with qualifying by out -of - valley contestants. Match play starts on Thurs day and continues through Monday, Sept. 5, Labor Day. Rogue Valley club members are qualifying in advance. The 418 entrant figure is not necessarily final. Dropouts could slightly cut the field. Still the Medford links event looms as the biggest, in size, golf tourney in Oregon this year. And, the field of strong contenders could make it one of the best. Visiting golfers number 313 of the overall total. Portland's delegation alone is 90, almost equal the home course entry of 95. California participants number 76 from 28 different cities. Thriftway and Nitrogen fin ished with 925 points and Gale V, although she failed to finish the final heat, came out of the race with 700 on the strength of a first and second in the prehminarys. Thunderbolt, Miss Buffalo and Such Crust were ranked in that order on the point board SOC Schedule Adds Whitman Ashland - Last minute changes have placed Whitman college of Walla Walla. Wash, on the Southern Oregon col lege grid schedule Oct. 1, at 8 p.m. in Ashland. Moffatt Naval Air field had been the scheduled opponent for that date, but the Twelfth Naval district in California has cut the allotment for var sity football. As a result, Mof fatt cancelled all of its games for the year. Whitman is a member of the Northwest conference which includes such schools as Pacific, Lewis and Clark, Linfield, College of Idaho, and Willamette. One other minor change has taken place on the Red Raider grid chart and that is the game time of the SOC-Oregon Tech battle. The classic had been set for 1:30 in the after noon, but the kickoff has been moved to 8 p.m., Oct. 15. Little more than a week sep arates the Raiders from their opening day of practice for the 1960 grid season which begins Sept. 6, at 9 a.m. with the initial meeting in the gym. Oregon ington. Largest single club representation will be from Oswego which has 24 men and women registered in the tour nament. Coos Bay will have 22 players here. Twenty will come from Eugene. The huge field includes 68 men, five of them seniors, with four-stroke or under han dicaps. There are 14 women with handicaps under 10. Heading a group of six scratch (no-handicap) contest ants is Dick Yost, Columbia Edgewater, Portland, a Walk er Cupper and ex-Oregon and Pacific Northwest open and amateur titlist. Others are Bob Atkinson, Portland Golf club, Oregon and Southern Oregon amateur champion three times each; Gene Maid ment, Colwood, Portland, re cent participant in the Nation al Public Links tourney in Hawaii; Jack Mattison, Eu gene; Charley Siver, Colum-bia-Edgewater, and Phil Un derwood, Waverly, Portland. Pre-Qualifying Pre-qualifying by all men and women entrants residing in the Rogue River Valley will conclude on Tuesday, Aug. 30. Valley participants, both RVCC member and non-members must qualify by that date. High handicappers of the area have through Monday, Aug. 29, for their 18-hole prelimi nary rounds. Players aspiring for championship flight posi tions must qualify on Tuesday and are instructed to contact the pro-shop for starting times. No Jackson or Josephine county residents have been Robert Bennett New SOC Coach Ashland - Robert Bennett has been named to the 1960 Southern Oregon college coaching staff to assist in foot ball and head the wrestling team after having served in coaching capacities at Coe col lege and Auguslana college. Bennett, 33, earned his B.A. degree from Augustana col lege in Rock Island, 111. in 1952 after graduating from Rock Island High school. He later gained his Master's de gree from the University of Colorado in 1954. Bennett's football and wrestling back ground has been star studded since it be gan at Rock Island High school. His wrestling career has been by far the most prom inent with the state champion ship crown and a Pacific AAU championship trophy to his credit. He was also a three time winner in the Whcaton Invitational tournament. Besides assisting in football and coaching the grapplers at SOC, Bennett will also teach some newly inaugurated gym nastics classes in the continu ally expanding SOC physical education department. Defending champions Fra ser and Emerson defeated the stubborn team of Mike Franks of Los Angeles and Don Dell of Bethcsda, Md., 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8. Southern Oregon entries who will lake part this Mon day in National Amateur qual ifying play at Portland may, if they wish, declare their first 18 hole scores as a qualifying round for the Medford tourna ment. Most, however, are ex pected to waive this option and play their prelim rounds here. Low 64 qualifiers in the men's division and the low 16 each in the senior men's and women's will bo in champion ship flight contention. Lower flights in all divisions will be of 16 players each. CRATER LME Black Tornado Picked To Win Grid Title Again Portland, Ore. - IVP1I -Medford, A-l high school football champion in 1959, has been picked to repeat in 1960 in the Oregon Journal pre-season coaches poll. Medford compiled 68 points in the balloting to edge Maxshfield which had 66 and Jefferson of Port land with 64 points. Other teams expected to be among the top 10 are South Eugene, South Salem, Pendleton, Beaverlon, Dav id Douglas, Lincoln and Wilson of Portland. Mt. ANGEL. SALEM WIN Salem - iUPII - Ml. Angel and Salem posted victories in the Oregon slate men's Softball tournament here Friday. Mt. Angel defeated Tri-City, 3-1. and Salem came up with a 3-2 victory over Albany. Milwaukee - (DPI) - Red Schoendienst, pronounced fit after a routine checkup, is expected to rejoin the Mil waukee Braves Monday. Venturi, who won the Mil waukee open in 1957, finish ed with a two-undcr par 68 to go with previous rounds of 65, and 69, which had been good for three-way ties for first Thursday and Fri day. The third highest money winner in pro golf this year has had only one bogie in the three rounds at North Hills Country club and has missed the green with his approach shots on only four holes.
