Baby dia pers, milk of magnesia, shortening and emery boards were among Henry ncchtold tlic items GE purchasing agents went to market for last year the same way they did for condensers and steel castings. Surprise Items The diapers were used for cleaning sensitive instruments involved in missile work, while the milk of magnesia and shortening came in handy as lubricants for precision ma chine parts. The emery boards used by the better-half in keeping her nails in trim were employed by GE in filing down gear contours. There were other items on the list that made the pur chasing agenls seem more like they were getting ready for a birthday party or a Fourth of July celebration. These in cluded toy balloons, soda straws, popsicle sticks, and ro man candles. The toy balloons were used in processing ceramics, me popsicle sticks for mixing glue, and the soda straws for packaging rod magnets. As for the roman candles, they prov ed effective in discouraging flocks of pigeons from congre gating around the company's facilities in Schenectady, N.Y. Still other unusual items that popped up on the giant electrical manufacturer's shop ping list were dental cement to measure vibrations in elec tronic equipment; a dozen goldfish for the pond at the Walcrford, N.Y. plant; and a sixteen inch battleship cannon once used on the U.S.S. Colo rado. GE explained that the can non is used as a hydrostatic pressure chamber in which re fractory metals, such as mo lybdenum, arc converted from powders to solids. These re fractory metals arc used in missiles because of their high melting points and excellent temperature characteristics. Large and Small The largest items on the list were the anlcnna rcflec lors purchased for use in the ballistic missile early warn ing system. These reflectors are 163 tcct high, 4IJU leet long, and weigh about three million pounds each. Among the smallest items bought during the year were cycIels-8,800 pieces to the pound-tor hair dryers, and tiny fastening pins - weighing .000031)6 pound each - used in electric clocks. Along more conventional lines, GE said it probably is the largest industrial purchas er of plastics in the world, and is one of the three largest con sumers of copper. The company estimated that some 85 to 88 per cent of its 45,000 suppliers arc small businesses. About one-half of its total expenditures, or about $1 billion annually, goes to these small suppliers. Group To Dispose Of Housing Project Washington -(UPll- Rep. Wal ter Norblad, (R-Ore.) said Thursday that the Navy de partment proposes to let the General Services administra tion dispose of the Defense Rental Housing project in Tillamook. The Oregon congressman said the Navy has no present or planned requirement for the project and no known de fense requirement has de veloped. The site, which covers 5.4 acres with a 12 acre sanitary sewer casement, has 14 apart ment type buildings with 60 units.
