Kennedy has set the pattern for a campaign counter-attack on one of his Re publican rival's biggest sell ing points - experience in foreign affairs. Kennedy told a cheering political rally in Alexandria, ! Va., Wednesday night that Vice President Richard M. Nixon "is experienced - ex perienced in policies of weak ness, retreat and defeat." The Democratic nominee's appearance in the Washington suburb before a crowd esti mated by police at more than 15,000 was his first campaign foray into Southern terri tory. ! Virginia Gov. J. Lindsay Almond led a delegation of Democratic state officials tak ing part in the rally. Almond exhorted t h e enthusiastic ! crowd to return Virginia to the Democratic column from which it strayed when it g:we its 12 electoral votes to the Eisenhower-Nixon ticket in 1052 and 1956. Sen. Harry F. Byrd, long time leader of Virginia Dem ocrats, was conspicuously ab sent. He has not yet endorsed ' Kennedy and the party's vice presidential candidate, Senate Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas. Byrd also was silent about his pres idential preference in 1952 and 1956. It was possible Kennedy j might continue his assault on the administration's interna- tional program tonight in a i speech to the Zionist Conven-' tion of America at New York ' city. The major theme of his j speech under flood lights at 1 a high school stadium in Al exandria Wednesday night was an assault on Nixon's role in administration foreign and defense policy.
