Portland (UPD A noted
space authority says the Rus
sians may be the first to put
a man into space but that this
country will not be far be
hind. Dr. Wiley Ley, who arrived
here for a visit Wednesday,
said the United States could
shoot a man into space by
1961 or even this year if it
wanted to "cut corners."
He said it probably would
be 10 years after safe re
covery of the first man from
a Mercury capsule before the
first man would land on the
moon.

Wall Street Chatter
New York - (UPD - James F.
Hughes of Auchincloss, Par
ker and Redpath says there
are ample technical reasons,
based on past experience, for
the market to continue its re
cent recovery.
Within the next week or so
It is possible that the upward
trend could run into an inter
esting technical test if the
breadth index exceeds its
June high without confirma
tion by the industrial aver
age. Hughes believes this could
provide a signal for a techni
cal correction that might last
for several weeks.
However, he adds, with
business holding merely firm
over the next few months, the
market might well do very
much better than it did during
the first half of the year.
Bache and Co. reports that
American Broadcasting-Paramount
and Phillip Morris both
have "exceptional" technical
positions, and expects further
short term gains here. Pea
body Coal appears to be at
tracting a larger following,
Bache adds.
Kenneth Ward of Hayden,
Stone and Co. has a list of
stocks he believes still point
to higher levels including:
Decca Records, Garrett Corp.,
E. J. Korvette, North Ameri
can Aviation, Spiegel, McDon
nell Aircraft, MGM and In
spiration Copper.
While the business picture
is not outstandingly encour
aging, there are enough bull
ish factors present to overbal
ance the seemingly pessimistic
attitude which prevailed
throughout the summer, ac
cording to Thomas and Mc-Kinnon.

Compounds May Aid
In Treating Tumors
Vienna, Austria (Science
Service) The addition of
small amounts of reserpine
compounds has been found to
enhance the action of anti
folic compounds now used in
the treatment of certain types
of tumors and leukemia.
Dr. Eli D. Goldsmith of
New York university de
scribed successful experiments
on the fruit fly at the lllh
International Entomological
Congress here. Dr. Goldsmith
conducted his experiments at
NYU's College of Dentistry
L where he is professor of his-

Previously reported action
by reserpine against leukemia
and the tumor sarcoma 37 in
the rodent led Dr. Goldsmith
to test it on the fruit fly Dro
sophila melanogaster, used in
studies of heredity.
Using low doses of two re-
and Serpasil, in combination
Iwith anti-folic compound
Aminopterin, Dr. Goldsmith
lowered the percentage of
adult flies that normally
emerge from the larvae.
