many roads to movieland in
cluding punching a New Or
leans cop in the nose.
It's not a recommended
route, but it worked for Ken
Scott.
Scott, a towering 6-foot 4
inch 200 pounder, belted his
way to a long term 20th Century-Fox
contract and good
roles in eight pictures. And he
owes it all to the New Orleans
constabulary.
Four years ago Ken, an an
nouncer in the Louisiana city,
spent his free time around the
harbor area water skiing.
"I was a member of a ski
ing club," he admitted, "but
we did more drinking than

trade aimed at prosperous
Western Europe and on in
creased agricultural production.
The Soviet decision to do
lay drastic industrialization
of this Balkan state has come
as a disappointment to local
party leaders, observers be
lieve, although open opposi
tion is not considered a pos
sible outcome.
Agriculture is having its
own problems, though. With
virtually all of Bulgaria s fer

garians have shown a new in
terest in dealing with the
West. Exports, mostly to the
Soviet bloc, changed little
last year but imports from
the West jumped from 14.6
per cent in 1058 to 22 per
cent in 1059. A three-year
trade agreement with France
wont into effect Aug. 1. An
other agreement has been
signed with the Benelux
countries.
The United States, which
reopened a legation in Sofia
last March after a diplomatic
absence of 10 years, will par
ticipate in the annual Inter
national Trade Fair at Plov
div in September.
Western economists expect
no drastic change in the Bul
garian economy. With little
more than agricultural prod
ucts to export, the country's
ability to build up hard cur
rency reserves is limited. Bul
garian currency remains soft.
The official rate pegs the
leva" at 6.8 lo the U.S. dol
lar. Tourists are given 9.5 lo
the dollar. But so low is the
leva's real value that $10
worth of it purchased outside
the country is worth about
$60 inside. The discrepancy
explains why the Bulgarians
forbid the import or export of
any local money.
College Editors

for "slanting news stories and
refusing to cover in an ade
quate manner the major na
tional and international issues
which face us today."
The college editors arc

of the Hunter College Arrow
of New York City, said that
the wire service reporters in

vor of segregation and were
not objective in their report

Ken recalled. "So I put the
top down on my convertible
and drove to Hollywood. By
the time I got here I was so
tanned I looked like Cochise.
"After a few days Fox gave
me a screen lest and signed
me to a contract, and I've
been working ever since."
Scott's most recent films are
"Desire in the Dust" and
"Beloved Infidel." He also
starred in "Five Gates to
Hell."

TV Reviewer Likes Comedy of Claudette Colbert

TV. Neither is Bob Hope.
So, when it comes to kid
ding politicians on Capitol
Hill, I'm ready to settle for
Claudette Colbert, of all peo
ple. Relations between the TV
industry and Congress being
what they are, this is prob
ably not the best time for a
producer to sell a TV series
that gently, ever so gently,
bounces laughs off the hill.
Actually, the way they play
the game, no time is best.
But a few years ago, when
we were all more innocent, a
pilot film called, "Welcome
to Washington" was produced
by Miss Colbert. It was side-
his friends on the police force.
"I was amazed," he grinned.
"They treated me like a
hero. I was interviewed on TV
and welcomed like Gen. Mac
Arthur, after leaving town
like a defector to the North
Koreans.
"Best of all, I was made an
honorary sheriff. My badge is
good until 1964.
"Of course, I skipped the
harbor area. Those guys
around the docks have it in
for me. Besides hitting the
cop, a bunch of us once sank
a police boat in the harbor just
for laughs."

bits of the traditional situ
ation comedy code - the eter
nal honeymooners, the red
blooded kids. But the show
also had some perky dialogue.
At 'one point, Leif Erickson,
playing Miss Colbert's hubby,
was asked if his next book
would be based on fact or
fiction.
"Half-and-half. It's history,"
he replied.
Not wildly funny or bold
but different enough to show
an honest, literate approach
to the task.
