r THURSDAY. AUGUST 25, 1960 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, ORE. Farm Leaders liked at Ike's Quota Request Washington-WPD-House and Senate Democratic farm lead ers bristled Wednesday at President Eisenhower's re quest that Congress cancel the "windfall" sugar quota it granted two months ago to the Dominican Republic. One clash occurred when Undersecretary of State C. Douglas Dillon appeared be fore the House Agriculture Committee in support of the legislation which the Presi dent asked in a special mes sage to Congress Tuesday. Dillon argued that if Con gress fails to act the United States will be handicapped in its relations in Latin Amer ica. He noted that the Or ganization of American States has found the Rafael Trujillo -regime guilty of at tempting to assassinate the president of a friendly coun try, Venezuela. Tampering , But the Committee Chair man Harold D. Cooley, D N.C., complained of what he called administration tamp ering with sugar quotas and said it already has boosted sugar prices in the United States to a 40-year high. He questioned the wisdom of the United States invok ing such "economic sanctions" against the Dominican Re public. Meanwhile, Sen. Allen J. ' Ellender, D-La., chairman of the Senate Agriculture com mittee, denounced the pro posed curb on sugar imports from the Dominican Repub lic and said the administra tion policy will "create an other Castro dictatorship in the Caribbean." Fears Bankruptcy "I urge the Congress to refuse to knuckle down to the bankrupt foreign policy of the Department of State a policy not only bankrupt of new ideas, but a policy whose apparent objective is to bankrupt the; United States," he said in a Seriate speech. Ellender said the Senate Foreign Relations committee should investigate the new policy and find out "who had a hand in it." Sen. James O. Eastland, D Miss., said , it was "prob ably the same group which handed over Cuba to Castro." Condensation of Planets Supported By New Eidence Chicago - Science Service) New evidence has been re ported here to support the theory that the earth and other planets were formed by condensation of material once' a part of the sun. Dr. Thomas Gold, head of the astronomy department at Cornell university in Ithaca, N.Y., said the high amounts of lithium on earth compared to the sun suggest that the solar system planets were previously part of a far-flung disk of the sun. He believes that a careful search of the heavens might reveal a star and its surround ing material in a state cor responding to that before the sun's planets condensed. Dr. Gold's theory is based on a recent observation by Dr. W. K. Bonsack of Cali fornia Institute of Technology and Dr. J. L. Greenstein of Mt. Wilson and Palomar ob servatories that certain stars whose brightness varies ir regularly are abnormally rich in lithium. They estimate there is at least ten times as much lithi um per ounce of material on the surfaces of these stars as there is in the surrounding material. , Abundance of Lithium Because of this high abun dance of lithium, Drs. Bon sack and Greenstein suggest that these stars must be capa ble of manufacturing this ele ment, the lightest of all known metallic elements. One such manufacturing process could be through high-energy mag- netohydrodynamic p r ocesses in the star's atmosphere, re sulting from the release of energy residing in the original magnetic field.
