"WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 24. 1960 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, ORE. I TV Writer Regards Spike Jones Show Indulgently By FRED DANZIG . United Press International New York - (UPI) - Maybe it's from being out too long in the sun, but I've come to regard "The Spike Jones Show" on CBS-TV with a friendly, indulgent spirit. Spike and his playmates -they include comedian Len Weinrib, Bill ("my name is Hozay Hemayonaise") Dana, Tioyce Hameson (or is it Joyce Jameson?) and Jelen Grayco are trying to break away from traditional TV comedy looks. They're hot for satire - the safe kind, of course - and dress things up with sophis ticated sets, songs, clothing and opening calligraphy. I've noticed that much of the humor is reminiscent of the stuff Steve Allen did and the reason turned out to be fairly obvious. Bill Dana, who now writes and produces the Jones show, also wrote gags for Allen. This summer, Dana is using Weinrib as if he was Louis Nye, which he isn't, yet, and I guess that leaves Spike ,Jones with the Steve Allen part and Miss Jameson as Don Knottes - Gabe Dell - Dayton Allen. Monday night, however, the highlight of the show was a vocal group called, "The Angels." The four children who comprise the group dis played an infectious, strong sense of rhythm and charm. The chief comedy serving, a look at a jazz drum-playing poetry team, studiously avoid ed the use of the word "beat nik." I think it's a tribute to the crew.. Means they're hip enough to know the "word is passe. It takes a certain amount of assurance to come in with a TV pilot film called, "The Trouble with Richard." One wrong move and the title gives the viewer a handy line for an opening brickbat. Monday night, a show bear ing that name slipped into the "New Comedy Showcase" lot on CBS-TV. Dick Van Dyke starred as Richard, a bank teller whose chief trou ble, aside from being under weight, was that he just didn't mesh with what he called civilization. He was a sort of Mr. Peppers in hi-fi. The plot - well, let's forget the plot. . It was about some extra zeroes on a check and added up to a big nothing. But the script, written by pro ducer Aaron Ruben, gave Van Dyke plenty of room in which to display his angular ami ability and structural flexibility. The Channel Swim: Will TV's "great debates" between Sen. John Kennedy and Vice President Richard Nixon be sponsored, now that Congress has set the stage for them? CBS . opposes sponsor ship. NBC and ABC say they'll consider sponsorship if the candidates have no objection. Hoagy Carmichael has left the cast of "Laramie," which begins its second NBC-TV season on Tuesday, Sept. 20. John Smith and Robert Fuller remain as "Laramie" regulars. "T h e Datchet Diamonds," starring Rex Harrison and Tammy Grimes, opens the new "Dow Hour of Great Mysteries" series on NBC-TV Tuesday, Sept. 20, instead of Friday, Sept. 9, as originally announced. 3-Month-0ld Girl Killed in Crash Gresham-(UP1)-A one-car ac- cidenl near here Tuesday night took the life of a three-month-old girl and seriously injured her twin brother. Multnomah county police said the car driven by Larry Franklin Collins, 19, Port land, struck a tree as he tried to avoid a rear end collision. The victim was Elizabeth Collins. The surviving twin, Larry Franklin Collins Jr. suffered severe head injuries . The mother, Dorothy Edith Col lins, 27, suffered minor in juries. S.r Lebanese Ships Collide; Three Missing London - (UPI) - An Ameri can tanker and Lebanese steamer collided in dense fog in the western Mediterranean early today. All but three crewmen of the small freight er were saved by a nearby U. S. troop transport. Only the bow of the Halcy on Med, a 1,948-ton freighter from Beirut, remained afloat after the mishap with the new tanker Esso Switzerland 120 miles east of Gibraltar. The military transport Le- roy Eltinge rescued 26 crew men after a dash to the scene. Three were missing. The Esso Switzerland, oper ated for Standard Oil compa ny of New Jersey with Pana manian registry, remained afloat.
