No Discernible National Need Indicated in Presidential Vote By A. ROBERT SMITH Mail Tribune Washington Correspondent En Route to Washington (Special) - Random conversa tions with voters in various states indicate no discernible national mood as the nation moves into a presidential elec tion. Nor is there any strong preference being expressed tor one presidential ticket over the other. As always, it depends on who one talks to. A California barber express ed gratitude that President Eisenhower bad kept him from being recalled to active duty - in short, he kept us out of war. But he said he didn't think Vice President Nixon had the same peace generating way about him. "Nobody seems to like Nix on. I don't have anything against him, but too many other people don't like him for him to make a good presi dent. I guess I'll vote for Kennedy," he said. The owner of a swanky steakhouse near N i x o n ' s hometown in southern Cali fornia said he is a Democrat and a Catholic and plans to support Sen. John F. Ken nedy. But he had doubts that Kennedy can win because of his religion. He believes there is still considerable prejudice against electing a Roman Catholic to the White House. Kennedy Victory Seen An Idaho fruit grower thinks Kennedy has the elec tion practically sewed up. The way he figures it, Kennedy will get the votes of all the Catholics and all the elder citizens who are anxious for a federal medical plan to safe guard them against financial distress in times of ill health. "My wife had trouble with her feet. It cost ;ne $700. I had the money, but there are lots of folks who don't have it," he said in support of a medical insurance program. "It all started during the war,'' he said. "The kids got to having plenty of money. They've had plenty of money ever since. Why is it the farm ers around here can't even have a vacation? It's because the kids won't look after things for them. They might take off for town and not be back for three days. When I was a boy and worked on a farm, a farmer could take a vacation because he knew we'd be there night and day." The grocer liked Eisenhow er because he talked the same language and obviously shares these views even if, as the grocer said, Eisenhower did n't know much about running the government. Farmer Unhappy A couple of agents for the U.S. Department of Agricul ture in Wisconsin agreed that the farmer generally is un happy with the way things have been going economically for him. "But as between the two candidates, it's like flipping a coin," said the elder one, ex plaining that neither Nixon nor Kennedy has wowed the farmers yet. "We've had an average of two farm auctions a week in this county, of farmers selling out and going to the city. There are three empty stores on this street, businesses that folded. If the farmer had it, he would spend it. But he just isn't getting it." "I have an idea," said the man who is personally synv pathetic to the Democrats, "that the farmers are going to vote for the party and not the candidate." But which parly remained an open question.
