A Christian Worship Gives Many Titles To Supreme Act By LOUIS CASSELS United Press International To Roman Catholics, it Is the Mass. In Eastern Ortho dox churcl.es, it is the Eu charist. Among Anglicans, lt is known as Holy Commun ion. Many Protestant's prefer to call it the Lord s Supper, Whatever its title. It Is the central and supreme act of Christian worship. It was instituted, by Christ himself at his last supper with his disciples, in -the upper room of a house in Jerusalem, a few hours before He was arrested, tried and crucified. Found in Corinthians ' The earliest written ac count of the simple ritual He performed, and the meaning He gave to it, is found in St. Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians. the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betray ed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He brake lt, and said, 'This is my body, which is'broken for you: This do in remembrance of me. In like manner also the cup, af ter supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood: This do, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance, of me.' " . Thus bread and wine were Christians, with the body and blood of Christ which were sacrificed to redeem men from their sins Eucharist, from a Greek word meaning thanksgiving, seems to have, the earliest term applied to the rite. An cient records show that regu lar' celebration of the Eu charist began in the primitive Christian Church early in the First Century A.D. It has con tinued ever since in virtually all branches of Christendom, the Quakers being the most notable exception. ' ' ' ' Different in Nature . Although Christians are united in their fidelity to this act of worship, they differ considerably in their under- standing of its nature and significance. Some Protestants, for ex ample, Baptists, Disciples of Christ and pentecostal groups observe the Lord s Supper as a "memorial" service. They believe that its primary pur pose is simply to remind Christians tnat "wnue we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Hornbrook Group Lists Speakers Hornbrook-The Rev. Hart- zell Buckner was guest pas tor in the pxilpit of the Horn brook Methodist church Aug. 14. Mr. Buckner, now pastor at the Methodist church In Din uba, Calif., served the Yreka church for eight years, and was transferred from Yreka 10 years ago. While In Yreka, he often served the Hornbrook church. Mr. Buckner's son. Bob, a youth lay leader at the Yreka Methodist church, was orig inally scheduled to take over at Hornbrook Aug. 14 as he did the previous Sunday, but asked his father to substitute for him. Mrs. Hartzell Buck ner. accompanied her husband to Hornbrook. Services next Sunday will be ' conducted by local lay leaders. The pastor, the Rev. William C. Ogden, plans to be back in the pulpit Aug. 28. Miss Oregon to Be Honored at Cottee Dr. George Roseberry will preach on "T h e River - of Sticks" Sunday at the 9:30 and 11 a.m. worship services at First Methodist church. Miss Oregon, Miss Rose mary Doolen, will sing for each service the solo "The Lord Is My Shepherd." The youth choir, will . sing Praise the Lord, the Al. mighty." Optometrists Attend Seminar, Medford Six Medford optometrists attended a postgraduate sem inar Tuesday at Rogue Valley Country club, at which Dr. A. M. Skcffington, St. Louis. Mo., presided. Medford optometrists at tending were Drs. Tom Ander son, Orval Eaton, Frank Free burger, A. W. Glutsch. Rich ard Nelson and William Thompson. But the vast majority of Christians in the world - in cluding Catholics, Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans, Presby terians and Methodists - re gard the Eucharist as a "sacra ment," or sacred mystery. They hold that God acts through the sacrament In a supernatural way to Impart to believers the uplifting of mind, the purifying of motive and the strengthening of will that is called grace. Among the sacramental churches, however, there are strongly - held differences' of doctrine about the nature of the Eucharistlc miracle. It is Catholic and Orthodox teaching that the elements of the service, which retaining the external appearance of bread and wine, are literally changed in Catholic termi nology, "transubstant i at e d" into the body and blood of Christ at the moment of con secration. Renewal of Sacrifice .; ' These communions regard the celebration of the mass as renewal" or "re-enact ment" of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. Leaders of the Protestant Reformation rejected the doc trine of transubstantiation and sought to eliminate from the Mass any suggestion of a "repitition't of the atoning act of Christ which, they said, was performed once and for all on Calvary. While asserting that the bread and wine of communion are sacred symbols rather than the literal body and blood of Christ, the Reforma tion churches held - and still hold - that Christ is spiritual ly "present" in the Eucharist in a real and unique sense. They believe that those who partake of the sacrament therefore partake of Christ, receiving His spirit as nour ishment of their souls. Other differences among Christian bodies concern de tails of the service. 4 Churches Tell Sunday Events Rogue Rim - The Rev D. Floyd Barnett, retired minis ter ' of - Hope ,.
