THURSDAY. AUGUST 18. 1960 MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. ORE. E 5 Try and -By BENNETT CERF- rILL FEATHER, in a whimsical mood, cased the office of a small printing plant down South and discovered that the male members answered proudly to the following given names: Lum, Dub, Teel, ,, Quince, Zack, Seph, Zeb, PtJB ,6B- Clem, Wash, and Sim. .na on, yes: the boss' name was Eustace! In a Texas elementary chool, reports Paul Crume, a teacher asked her sixth graders to define a pronoun. "A pronoun," answered one youngster obviously a devotee of the sports sec tions "Is a nouiK that's been around a long time long enough to be a pro." A sure-fire method for meeting people quickly at a, vacation resort, notes golfer Cary Middlecoff, is to pick up the wrong ball on a golf course.. 9 1980, by Bennett Cerf. CUtrlbuted Ty K(nf Features Syjidlff Alcohol Increases Cholesterol In Drinker's Blood New York - (Science Serv-ice)-Three ounces of whiskey will increase the cholesterol in the drinker's blood, four Minnesota researchers have reported here. The finding conflicts with an older theory that heavy drinking protects against hardening of the arteries. Cho lesterol is a fatty substance many physicians have linked with artery disease, heart at tacks and strokes. In the tests, 30 volunteers in the Minnesota State prison were given three ounces of 100-proof whiskey a day, while 30 others received only a syrup of the same calorie content as the alcohol. 'Significant Increase' The alcohol caused a "small but significant" increase in serum cholesterol in the men. Similar tests in dogs showed a much greater rise in choles terol" blood levels. Earlier studies had indicat ed chronic ' alcoholics might have a lower incidence of ar tery thickening than other persons. But the researchers said the new work made clear that alcohol cannot be consid ered a cholesterol decreasing agent. The study was reported in Circulation Research, a jour nal of the American Heart as sociation, by Drs. Francisco Grande, Lyle J. Hay, H. Stop Me A N Sanitary Problem Should Precede Industry Growth Portland-(UPI)-Dr. Carl Holm. president of the State Board of Health, said Wednesday 'Oregon should curtail all ex pansion of industry until the state sanitary problems are licked." Dr. Holm told board mem bers the great emphasis in uregon was on industry growtn but that no one wanted to take care of the wastn products. If you are going to have industry, then you have to take care of the snnitnrv needs," he said. Several board members showed concern over growing heaith Droblems during riisrns- sion of the board's upcoming Budget, to be presented to the legislature in January. . Board memhprs sairf IVio legislators should realize that it tney were going to attract industry to the state, Oregon should have a eood health record. The last legislature gave the board $2,231,000, which was less than asked. The De partment of Finance and Ad ministration has recommend ed a $2.4 million budget for the two years starting next JulV 1. Dr. R. H.
