Flames Battled
West of Roseburg
Roseburg -IUPU- About 300
men were still fighting the
state's only reported forest
fire this morning after flames
had consumed some 1,700
acres of brush, grass and green
timber 45 miles west of here.
A spokesman for the Coos
Protective association said the
fire was mostly controlled.
Crews had completed lines
around 85 per cent of the
burned area by late Monday
and expected to finish the job
today in an area of rough
ground on the west side of the
fire.
He said the weather was fa
vorable yesterday and was ex
pected to be only a little drier
today, but not enough to
hamper fire fighting opera
tions.

Portland To Get
Property Tax Hike
Portland - (UPD - Portland
property taxes for the coming
fiscal year will be increased
2.4 per cent, according to
Multnomah county assessor
Joe Hawkins.
Hawkins said tax rates for
persons living outside the city
have not been determined but
will be announced shortly.
Portland tax rates were in
creased six per cent last year
and 13 per cent in 1958.
The consolidated tax rate
this year is 65 mills in the
city as compared with 56.4
mills last year. But the mill
age is being applied against a
valuation of 40 per cent of
true cash value as against an
assessed value of 45 per cent
in 1959.
He said the valuation was
being made to "get in step"
with counties in other parts
of the state. The result, he
indicated, will be to level off
the tax picture. He said the
industry has shied away from
Multnomah county as a high
tax county.
