The orator was perplexed New Type Propeller Will Give Aircraft Longer Cruise Range Windsor Locks, Conn. - (UPD -A radically-designed propel ler is being developed for the Navy, which engineers expect will give aircraft a longer cruising range and allow shorter takeoffs with consider ably heavier payloads. Now undergoing wind tun nel tests at Hamilton Standard division of United Aircraft Corp., its inventor, George Rosen claims that by chang ing the surface curvature of the blade, known as the blade camber, it will be possible to adjust the lift of a propeller blade to the most efficient level for any flight condition. Rosen is chief of analysis at Hamilton Standard. A full-scale prototype is scheduled to be ready within nine months and production will start within two years. Could Increase Range William E. Diefemderfer, Hamilton engineering mana ger, said the new variable camber propeller could in crease the range of high-speed transports by 30 per cent, and add 50 knot to the speed of low-level aU-ick planes. "For longe - range, endur ance aircraft - that it, early warning and anti-submarine types - takeoffs with heavy fuel loads would be possible even from short runways," he said, "with endurance improv ed as much as 20 per cent. In the case of future verticle take off aircraft, the propeller might mean payloads half again as big as those envisag ed now." Rosen explained his vari ble camber . propeller this way: "Next to size, the camber of a propeller blade is the most important single factor in de termining its lift. By changing the blade camber, it would be possible to adjust the lift of a propeller blade to the most ef ficient level for any flight condition. Thus it would avoid the compromise of efficiency between the requirement for takeoff versus' cruise opera tions embodied in the design of all propeller blades today." Single Air Foil Surface He said the new propeller would use "six or eight blades staggered behind the front ones. Each pair of front and rear blades would create a single air foil surface similar to an airplane's wing with its flaps extended. To change the camber, the propeller would automatically alter the angles at which the front and rear blades meet the air. Since the two blades are in effect one surface, this change of angle would vary the overall camber of the blades, just as a wing's curvature changes when the flaps go down. The result would be to increase or decrease lift." FINES TOO SMALL Tallahassee, Fla.-OIPD-Sher-iff John Ray Broxson told a state appeals board Monday he has to borrow money from the bank to keep the sheriff's office operating in Santa Rosa county because County Judge M.
