John L. Gregory
Candidate for
Legislature Post '
John L. Gregory, '49, coun
ty real estate developer, was
selected as the Democratic
candidate for state represent
ative at a meeting of the
Jackson County Democratic
Central committee last eve
ning. The post, for stale repre
sentative, was vacated recent
ly by the withdrawal of Miss
Inez Holcomb.
Gregory, who lives on Hol
comb Springs rd., Sams Val
ley, has lived in the area for
three years. Prior to moving
here he was a rancher, has
also been employed in juve
nile work with the California
youth authority, and mining.
He attended San Jose State
college, City College of Los
Angeles and Whittier college.
He is a licensed real estate
salesman.
Gregory is a member of the
Shriners, St. Mark's Episco
pal church and the Civil Air
Patrol. He and his wife, Hel
en, have two children and
three grandchildren.
Principal Concern
One of his principal con
cerns, he says, is with the
tax structure of the state of
Oregon.
"I feel that the tax struc
ture of the slate of Oregon
in antequated and needs new
thinking as well as new struc
ture," he said.
Gregory claims that the
right people are not always
being taxed at present. He
cited elderly people and
young married couples as
groups which have suffered.
As a result, he said, a tax
climate which will be equit
able to new business and the
new labor pools which will
come with this business must
be created.
New Name Suggested
For South Pacific Highway
The present South Pacific
highway from Willow Springs
to Ashland will be called
Rogue Valley blvd., once the
new Pacific freeway is con
structed. The name was agreed on
today during a meeting called
primarily to discuss signs
along the new freeway. About
20 persons representing Med
ford, Ashland, Jackson coun
ty, Medford Chamber of Com
merce, and the motor court
association heard proposals of
Val Johnson, state highway
commission representative.
By calling the old highway
Rogue Valley blvd., it will
get away from the highway
idea, it was explained. This
will be an arterial route serv
ing the valley and with the
predicted population growth
probably will be a boulevard.

in a surprising last -minute
reversal.
A crowd of 20,000 persons
gathered outside the House of

proclaim an end to 82 years
of colonial rule.
Makarios followed with an
appeal for "close cooperation"
among various political fac

the occasion with a message
of "warmest good wishes."
Follows Fighting
Independence had been
slated for the island earlier
this year but was held up dur

war and accompanying terror

Democrats Voice
Dissatisfaction
On Committee
Continuing d i s satisfaction
with the county court's selec

by Democrats last night.
Chairman Harper Edwards,
speaking before the Jackson
