This figure is even more interesting consid ering that 24 of the 89 women were already married 8 with children and 20' others were planning to be married during the summer. i The survey points up how home economics has become Increasingly a double future" field, says Dean Miriam G. The sink, while still an es sential, is being moved into a windowless corner. This is the word from Jac queline A. Dubetski, a kitchen planning expert who helps the Consolidated Edison company advise housewives on kitchen arrangements and how to use their appliances Miss Dubetski said the dish washing machine has reduced the status of the sink and in creased the housewife's leis ure more than any other sin gle invention. It is the most wonderful gadget that anyone ever thought of," she said. "It eliminated the most unpleas ant chore in the house." The dish washer also has revolutionized kitchen ar rangements, she said. All housewives used to insist on double sinks, but now that dishwashing is done me chanically, a single sink is enough. This recipe, especially developed for hot weather cooks, tnkes just minutes to prepare. Imagino, tasty cookies without heating the oven. So simple is this rocipo to prepare you may want lo let your school-age children make a batch of the cookies. It would provide an excellent activity for them when they say "What can I do today there's nothing doing around here." . In addition to being so easy to prepare, these cookies park a real nutritional wallop. Nutritious breakfast cereals which con tribute protein, valuable B vitamins, essential minerals, and food energy are combined with raisins, coconut, dates, honey, lemon juice, and sweetened condensed milk to make delectable tasting cookies. If shaped in pan, cut into squares. Wrap in waxed psper or saran. Social Events Appliances the sink by a window because a housewife spent about three hours a day at the sink and could not very well stand there staring at a blank wall,'' Miss Dubetski said. "Now we are putting other work areas by the window instead." Electric Stoves The kitchen planner said she has discovered that many housewives still have quite a bit to learn about cooking on electric stoves. Among the instructions she gives are; -All pots should have tight fitting lids because of the in tense heat generated by elec tric burners. Also, less water can be used than in gas cook ing. -Medium-weight aluminum pans should be used. The bot tom of a porcelain pot may melt and become fused to an electric burner. Glass cook ing utensils should be used only if a protective grid is put over the burner first. -The oven door of an elec tric range should be left open for broiling. The broiler pan should not be too close to the heat. You can tell if it is too close if grease spatters. Miss Dubetski recommend ed that the kitchen be arrang ed in a work triangle consist ing of the laundry center, the counter - sink - cooking center and the refrigerator-freezer center. "There should be a work surface next to every ap pliance," she said. "Never put the dish washer next to the refrigerator because its heat ing element can affect the coolness of the freezer. The refrigerator should not be next to the oven side of the stove for the same reason. And the refrigerator door should open away from the adjoining counter area. It is amazing, she said, how many housewives do not know that it is possible to buy refrigerators with doors that open either to the left or right. Most think they come with only one door style.
