' Hoover Denounces Religious Bigotry On 86th Birthday New York IUPII Herbert Hoover took the occasion of Jiis 86th birthday anniversary today to voice his disgust at religious bigotry and stntcd it would be "a dreadful idea" to Inject in the presidential cam paign. ' Hoover in 1B28 defeated the first Roman Catholic ever to run tor the United Stales presidency, the Democratic candidate, Alfred E. Smith. This year's Democratic can didate, Sen. John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts, is the sec. ond Catholic in history to seek the presidency. His Republi can opponent, Vice President Richard M. Nixon, is, like Hoover, a member of the So ciety of Friends (Quaker) Church. Fire in Voice In a news conference held Tuesday with reporters who requested a birthday inter view, Hoover was reminded of the religious sentiment against Smith in that election and asked him how he felt about, the Issue being raised again in the present cam paign. .There was fire In his voice when he replied: "I think It's Tacklei Pile of Medford Regional Edition Stocks Mixed in Moderately Active Early Trading New York - (UI'll - The stock market was mixed and moder ately active in early trading today. In the 1928 campaign I must have denounced it half a dozen times." He added, however, that the 1928 campaign differed from the present one in that in the Southern states then prohibition was an issue and also they tended to Identify Smith and Tammany Hall." Smith was an anti-prohibitionist in the "wels vs. dry" issue. Glad for Young Generation Hoover would not express himself on political questions other than to say he was glad to see the younger generation taking over and to observe: "You will naturally expect any man who has been hon ored by his party with the presidency to vote the ticket of his party and I have no doubt you will find that also applies to my friend, former President Truman. Asked about the future for America, the former president said: "I don't believe this re public is in its decline and fall. With growing strength and determination, we can influence the expansion of freedom in the world." Morning Mail Tribune Page 2 up u.oJ. ana us iiocki 204.08, up 0.64. Byrd (D-Va.) was reported under heavy pres sure today to make a public declaration in support of the Kennedy-Johnson ticket. He has refused to yield so far, although most . of the other top drawer Democratic leaders in Virginia have en dorsed the national ticket headed by Sen. John F. Ken nedy of Massachusetts. Before the Democratic Na tional Convention last month, Byrd had endorsed Kennedy's running mate, Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas, for the Civil Rights Bid Pushed Despite Senate Rejection Washington -(UPD -Republi cans pushed ahead today with their drive for new civil rights legislation despite Sen ate rejection of President Ei senhower's two-pronged rights program. Sen. .Jacob K. Javits (R- N.Y.), undismayed by Tues day's administration setback, planned to introduce legisla tion embodying the civil rights plank of the Republi can platform. Javits also said he would back this up with a resolu tion seeking to change the Senate rules and tighten curbs on filibusters such as those used by Southerners to stall civil rights measures. Resounding GOP Defeat The New Yorker's move to inject the controversial issue back into the post-convention session of Congress followed a resounding GOP defeat .on civil rights. By a 54-28 vole along party lines, the Senate tabled - and thus killed - the President's program which he had recom mended in a special message to Congress Monday. Republicans charged the ac tion showed that the Demo crats had no intention of liv ing up to campaign promises to enact strong rights laws in support of their own liberal platform plank. 4-H NEWS Saddle Tramps The Talent 4-H Horse club, Mt. Wagner Saddle Tramps, have made use of films avail able to them through the 4-H office at the courthouse and actual practice with horses to round out their program for 1960. "Tennessee Walking Horse" was the first film shown to this group by Bill Bagley at the home of Dean and Linda Sommer. Later the films "A Horse and Its Heritage" and "Horse Sense" were shown at the home of Jerri Lee Ramos. The films are in color and we found "Horse Sense" to be very helpful in sofety rules for horsemanship. Mrs. Ramos served refreshments which ended the evening. Members and their leader, William Sommer, cleaned an area where an old sawmill was located at Talent and practices were held July 28 and Aug. 6 to work on Trail horse, horsemanship, and hal ter classes. More practices arc scheduled there before the Jackson county fair which will begin Aug. 13 at the fair grounds. Also an evening of worK on record books will be held before fair time. The Sis-Q Horse club in vited us to a meeting in July and the leader, Mr, Stewart, let us practice with his horse. He helped all of us with judg ing and halter class. Mrs. Stewart served refreshments before we left. Byrd was vacationing in Switzer land at the time of the nomi nation. Has 'No Comment' , When he returned to Wash ington Monday, Byrd said only that he had "no comment at this time on the coming election." As the chief spokesman for the conservative wing of his party, Byrd has told friends that he is dissatisfied with nearly all of the ultra-liberal platform adopted by the Democratic convention. He also found no comfort in the Republican platform. C0TTCEJ SLIPS 1 37 Rag. 1.98 Fine Sanforized cotton slips with shoulder strap, clasticized at side waistline. Lace or em broidery trim fronts. Along with the Southern Democrats' distaste for the civil rights planks in both platforms, Byrd was reported to regard the Democratic plank as offensive. It con tains a declaration against state right-to-work laws and against the Taft-Hartley pro vision permitting those 'laws. Virginia is one of the states with a right-to-work law. Other pre-convention John son partisans have pressed Byrd to make a public en dorsement of the -Kennedy-Johnson ticket. Pressure on Byrd no doubt reflects memories of what happened in Virginia in 1952 and 1956, when President Ei senhower carried the normal ly Democratic state with an assist from Byrd. The Virginia senator did not endorse Eisenhower but said in an October, 1952, speech that he could not sup port the Democratic ticket headed by Adlai E. Stevenson. In 1956 with Stevenson again the presidential nominee, Byrd said only that his po sition was unchanged.
