NO'HE HAD TO HAVE Requirements Listed For First Graders County School Supervisor Dealous Cox, today reminded parents having children ready for the first grade this fall of the state law that requires a child to be six years of age or have his sixth birthday be fore Nov. 15 to be eligible for admission this school year. The schools do not have to admit students with birthdays after this date, he said. Cox stated that most schools require a birth certificate at the time of registration. Appli cation for birth certificates may be obtained from the county school superintend ent's office or from the Jack son county clerk's office in the courthouse. These applica tions should be sent in prior to Aug. 15. Physical and dental exami nations for first year students must be obtained also. M M Time A SADDLE Why Laugh at Primitives, We Have Charms, Too Primitive peoples make it pretty tough for themselves by imagining the "evil spirits" are constantly pursuing them. These people wear charms that are supposed to have a counter-action something or other that will neutralize the evil. We laugh and poke fun at the untutored savage. We say he is stupid to believe such silly things. Wear Armbands Primitive people often wear armbands with symbolic fig ures, or necklaces of seeds, claws, teeth, or bones to ward off the evil spirits. But this idea is not entirely confined to the savage. You can find someone on the street or at a restaurant table that is carry ing a "rabbits foot, or a lucky coin" in his pocket. He may have a four-leaf clover in his billfold. Any of these, or other "charms" are "luck charms." Some of your own friends will admit that, now or some Convict Executed In San Quentin San Quentin, Calif. -(UPD- Robert S. Harmon, 27, San Diego, who did not want any body to stop his execution, was killed Tuesday on the San Quentin Prison gas chamber after a brief delay. The proceedings were post poned when Albert Bendich, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, filed a writ of habeas corpus and a petition for a stay in the Cali fornia Supreme Court 12 min utes before his date with' death. . The court clerk telephoned directly to the gas chamber, and the execution was held up until the writ was denied about a half hour after it was received. APPOINTMENT TOLD . The appointment of Die Walsh as art director for the Jackson County Republican Central committee was an nounced by Chairman Joseph D. Walsh at a meeting of the executive board Monday at Medford hotel. Precinct or ganization was the chief topic of discussion by the GOP group which meets every oth er Monday at noon. BUILD TALLEST HOTEL New York-(UPD-The world's tallest hotel will be built in mid -Manhattan starting this fall, Loew's Theaters Inc-an-nounced Tuesday. The 50- story structure is expected to cost $50 million and will have 2,000 rooms. is! By Jimmy Hatlo DO A SADDLE HE GOT DOES HE USE IT ? NOT AFTER THE ,, FIRST FEW RIDES HE DOESM'T Small Worlds Around Us By Lynn M. Watkins time ago, they wore a copper wire around their wrist or ankle to "ward off rheuma tism." One old but very po tent "charm" was the horse chestnut carried in the pocket or purse. A horseshoe, nailed upside down over the door, was considered to be "good medicine," bringing good luck to all who passed it, and for those who resided within. Snakebite Preventive A piece of "snake-root," carefully dried and cured, was expected to prevent the bite of a venomous snake. Even if the snake was dumb enough to bite a person thus fortified, then the venom was thought to be impotent. Here was an example in which 'one 'charm" was strong enough to out charm another. Wishing on a wishbone, or carrying the rab bit's foot was to accomplish the same result. Many of these things are as American as hot dogs or chocolate sodas. Many of us still believe in charms, but ridicule the "evil eye." Still we laugh at the uncultured savage who believes in the potency of a bone, a tuft of hair, a tooth, or a feather he may wear around his neck to ward off "an evil spell." They are all silly except one. That's the look one mot orist gives another when he thinks he is being taken ad vantage of. That's the real "evil eye. Disabled Airliner In Safe Landing Palmdale, Calif. - (UPD -Seventy-nine persons aboard a DC-4 airliner with a stuck nose gear were herded to the rear of the plane Tuesday so the pilot could make a perfect emergency landing on a foam covered runway. Pilot George Coddington of nearby Costa . Mesa circled Burbank airport for half an hour trying to lower the stuck nose gear. Then he flew to this nearby airport and brought down the plane on its tail to avert nosing over. Only casualty among the 79 passengers and five crew' men aboard was Mrs. Anna P. Sionorino, 26, of St. Louis, a passenger, who received chest injuries. Coddington said he had the passengers moved to the back section of tile plane so their weight would be on the rear wheels and lessen the danger of the craft tipping onto its nose. Would Lessen Causa "We would love to have a chance to show the candidates the wholesome way boys and girls develop in the frame work of appropriate nudist ac tivities. I feel that a study of the principle of accepting the body in its complete natural form to eliminate morbid curiosity of growing children will lessen one of the causes of juvenile delinquency. "We don't have this type of delinquency in nudist parks." mere was no immediate reply from either camp. However, it is possible that the challenge has not yet reached them. Mrs. Suplee said she intended to send let ters this week to the Repub lican and Democratic candi dates. Debate Site Offered Coincidentally, she offered to throw open the grounds of her sunny Rest Lodge, a capacious nudist camp four miles outside Palmcrton, Pa., to the two major party candi dates for a debate on this and other burning issues be fore an audience of nudists of all kinds, capacious and otherwise. If the presidential nomi nees can't make it, she sug gested the vice presidential candidates might want to have a go at barefaced argu ment. She was quick to deny that the debaters would be required to abide by the house rules. When we have visitors. they don't have to divest un less they want to, she said. A visiting dignitary at our conventions does not neces sarily have to go in the nude." Difference of Oponion There is considerable dif ference of opinion in political circles about the size of the nudist vote in this country and also as to whether they vote as a bloc. Experienced observers have noted that that when a practicing nudist is asked about the strength of the movement, he usually answers with one of two ques tions: 1. "Do you mean member wise or togethernesswise?" 2. "How many people sleep with pajamas?" Based on point No. 2, the voting potential of the nudist cause presents a posture that, if kineticized could be a fac tor with which to reckon, ac cording to some seasoned ob servers of the political scene, i FILTER FLO WASHER ONE MACHINE with 48 washing combinations.
