The five, living in Marvel Cave Courses Available Ashland -Dr. Bill Sampson, director of summer session on the Southern Oregon college campus has announced that courses to be offered during the post-session, Aug. 15-16: are: social , science in the elementary school, language arts in the elementary, .and Spanish "in the elementary school.. WRECK KILLS 12 Fortaleza, Brazil-IUPII-A pas senger train jumped the tracks about 100 miles south of here Tuesday night, killing at least a dozen and perhaps as many as 100 persons. Kennedy awaited word today from former Pres ident Harry S. Truman on the date for a meeting to map Truman's campaign role. Gov. Abraham Ribicoff of Connecticut planned to meet with Truman today in Inde pendence, Mo., as a special emissary for Kennedy. He was expected to contact Ken nedy at his office here by tele phone immediately after the conference. Kennedy plans to meet with Truman in Independence this month, , possibly when the Massachusetts senator travels to Des Moines, Iowa, Aug. 21 to attend a meeting of Demo cratic farm belt leaders. It will be the first time that Kennedy and Truman have met since Truman charged that the Democratic conven tion was "rigged" in Kenne dy's favor. Truman, a backer of Sen. Back Stairs: Br FRANK ELEAZER Washington-WPS-Back stairs at the White House: Now that President Eisenhower has fin ished relaxing at Newport and Denver hundreds of other people arc relaxing who couldn't while he did. When a president travels, it's not just a matter of some body packing his bag. It s i vast logistical problem involv ing planes, cars, helicopters, and boats; pilots and police; admirals and industrialists; seamen and trash collectors. Sometimes the daily rou tines even of children are dis ordered. At old Fort Adams, part of the Newport, R. I., naval base where the Presi dent stayed on his visit the small fry of several score Navy families living nearby were ordered to keep quiet and quit hanging around the streets. It seems that presidents generate garbage just like other people, so the base trash man had to be told when, where and how often to col lect it. Special Orderi Everybody on the big naval base had special orders for the occasion, embraced in fat mimeographed document prepared by the base chief of staff and entitled inevitably, "operation vacation." ' This covered everything from the spare tire and cover required for the President's golf car, to the high fidelity record player, with records," needed for his house. Some how they forgot to specify what kind of records, and in the event Eisenhower heard nothing but rock 'n' roll for the past month now at least he knows why. The President's bubble top limousine is driven or flown from Washington many places he ' goes, so he can wave lo the people who like to see him drive by. An open Secret Service car also goes along, Helicopters Shipped On Eisenhower s recent trips to Asia and South America a fleet of 50 helicop- Four Rounds of Plays Completed By Festival Group Ashland - Tuesday night's 688 audience for "The Trage dy of King Richard the Sec ond completed four rounds of plays at the Oregon Shake spearean Festival, Ashland. A total of 14,274 persons have attended the first sixteen nights at America's First Eliz abethan Theater, a lead of 701 over 1959. Topping the box office to tals so far is the popular com edy "The Taming of the Shrew," which has been seen by 4,614. Second in gate re ceipts is "Julius Caesar," now listing 3,760. "Richard" and "The Tempest" are running very close in house totals, with "Richard" now listed at 2,975 and "Tempest" at 2, 925. Advance sales continue to run high, with a very heavy sale during the week of John Webster's "The Duchess of Malfi." The theater's first non-Shakespearean drama is set for Aug. 22 opening and will be repeated Aug. 31. General Manager William Patton reported that seating is still available for nearly all performances, with the fewest availabilities on "Shrew" night. Reservations for all remaining nights should be made as soon as possible. The Festival's 20th season continues nightly through Sept. 3. Capitol Visitors Greet Nixon Washington-tUPD-Vice Pres ident Richard M. Nixon can't take his curbstone campaign ing to the people while he is tied down in the Senate but that hasn't stopped his hand shaking activity. The people are, in a sense, coming to him and providing a daily crowd literally at his office door. Naturally, the Re publican presidential nominee is making the most of it. The post-convention session of Congress, coming at the height of Washington's sum mer tourist season, finds the Capitol corridors crowded every day with hundreds of sightseers lined up waiting lor seats in me visitors gal lery. When he isn't presiding overQthe Senate, Nixon works most of the time at his pri vate office down the corridor from the Senate chamber. It's the same hallway where the tourists wait for scats in the visitors' galleries. There's always a hubbub when Nixon appcarse in the hallway and If time permits, he handshakes his way along the line. The Vacation ters, with 100 pilots to keep them flying, was flown and shipped around the world. Wherever it was known or believed the President might want to make a 5 or 10 min ute chopper flight-from jet field to downtown, for instance- chopped detachment was set up in advance, with fuel, supplies, and mainten ance men. On domestic trips, fewer copters are needed. . In Newport, they proved in valuable. It took the Presi dent 15 minutes to travel by car from his quarters to his office, separated by the busi ness district of Newport. - By y a c h t-the 93-foot Barbara Anne-the trip across an arm of Narragansett Bay took 10 minutes. A helicopter flight cut this to five minutes and offered door-to-door delivery besides. Secret Service Ready The Secret . Service of course is always on hand, in large but unspecified num bers. Wherever he goes a White House switchboard is set up, tied in . with the regular switchboard in Washington. Actions Reported So, while the President golfed, others worked. He worked part time too, of course, as presidents always must. On his recent trip Western Union, from Newport and Denver, moved about 400,000 words of press copy, reporting his actions.
