'-'j Robert Ryan (fourth from right) and Marie Spottswood (left), director, join coffee conference to discuss operation of Oakwood School, the institution Ryan helped found in the San Fernando Valley. 'A "FILM HERO (Continued) body all but convinced him and other founders to scrap the project. The day before Bob's scheduled return to the West Coast, one of the parents told him of a rumor that Marie Spottswood, director of a school in New York, was about to quit after 21 years. Knowing she was considered one of the top educators in the country, Bob scoffed at the idea of even approaching her. "She'd just laugh at me!" he replied. "So what do you have to lose?" the per sistent mother replied. "Nothing," admitted Bob, who was con vinced that unless a miracle happened soon the school would have to close anyway. Postponing his return, he went to see -Miss Spottswood. He didn't beat around the bush, either. "How. would you like to be head of a school in the San Fernando Valley? Be fore you answer, let me tell you we don't pay much, we have an inadequate staff, and I doubt we can go on much longer. Are you interested?" "Tell me more," she replied. "More? What else do you want to know?" "How and why the school was started, how much you can pay, and just how many . students there are." After Bob had answered these and more questions, she still had a Anal inquiry. "To whom am I responsible?" "You mean you want to be boss?" "That's the idea," she agreed. "The place is all yours," he assured her. "I promise you, no one will interfere." Bob even suggested she come out and take a look at the school herself, with a return ticket provided if she didn't want to stay. Like Caesar, she came, she saw, and she conquered. Miss Spottswood's first move was to turn away all children who were un able to meet the new academic standards she set for the school and the standards grew till the Oakwood School is now con sidered one of the best, scholastically, in the West. She gradually replaced most of Family Weekly, August 7, 1960 the teachers and hired new ones. "The people she hired had to be idealists, to work for what we could pay and still have the qualities Miss Spottswood de mands," Bob reports. "Not all the teachers worked full time." Miss Spottswood didn't become discour aged when, thanks to her rigid standards and strict discipline, enrollment fell so low again it. seemed the school would have to close. But it picked up quickly once her approach a combination of progressive and traditional education which she simply describes as "modern" started paying dividends. How the school's reputation grew was evident from the number of teachers from all over California who came to ob serve it. Three new buildings had to be added to accommodate the 90 students. As before, the school starts at kindergarten and goes through the sixth grade. However, stand ards have now risen so high that two out of three flunk the entrance ' examinations. What's the ultimate plan for the school, and Bob Ryan's participation in particular? "Timothy and Cheney are in high school now, but my youngest Lisa, 8 still at tends Oakwood. But even when she grad uates, I feel that after eight years of hard work I'm too interested in the project to give it up, ever," Bob explains. "As for the school, we have two ultimate goals: to establish a good school for no more than 125 exceptional students. This may not seem like much considering the 750,000 people now living in the San Fernando Valley. Yet we feel if even 50 out of the 125 really turn out to be exceptional, we'll have done a great service to our community. "Also, we hope the school will serve as a teachers' training ground. So, you see, we have plenty to work for in the future, regardless whose children we teach." An idealist's point of view? Certainly. But without it the Oakwood School wouldn't exist Chances are it never would have been born.
