After seeing scores of these women, and after satisfy i n g myself that there was nothing wrong with the coccyx or of its joint with the sac rum (bone at uk alvakkz me end ot tne spine), my impression is strong that the trouble is aris ing in a disturbed nervous system. In another similar group of people who are mild ly psychotic there is pain in a perfectly normal rectum - pain which is not affected in any way by the passing of gas or the moving of the bowels. In all my days, I never saw a patient of this type who was any better for having had the coccyx removed, and I doubt if .today any surgeon of ex perience and porbity could be found who would willing ly perform the operation. The disease may seem to be in the coccyx but really It Is up in the brain. Miyo Clime the newspapers where one after another of these young criminals, on being released, promptly goes back to his old game of beating up, raping, or perhaps killing, girls or women. After having practiced a great deal of psychotherapy in my 55 years of practice, I have absolutely no faith in the idea that even a skilful and devoted psychiatrist can make a good citizen out of a psycopathic delinquent or "so ciopath." Such a man (or woman) seems to have been born without any sense of de cency or any desire to be an honorable and respected and responsible citizen. As I have noted in this column,' some able psychiatrists, like Dr. G. N. Thompson, of Los An geles and Dr. Melitta Schmi deberg, of New York, after years of study of these socio paths have lost all hope of helping them. As they say, the psycopathic criminal does not want any treatment. Other psychiatrists have pointed out that it is stupid to send these criminals to a mental hospital for treatment if only because the probability is that in the institution there are only a few doctors avail able to care for several hun dred or a thousand patients. The doctors can hardly see the patients, let alone try to treat them. Now I read that at the recent meeting of the Amer ican Psychiatric Association, Drs. Emanuel Messinger and Benjamin Apfelberg, of New York, after reviewing 26 years of work with prison ers, concluded that perhaps one in 20 could be influenced a bit by psychiatric treat- GAZERJ R - POLL AN- Activity Guide i la ihm Stnrt. Mcdford Hi Funds for Predator Forwarded To State The Jackson county court Friday signed an order for transmittal of $3,565 in budg eted funds for predator con trol in Jackson county to the state treasurer. Under the agreement with the state, the county pays $2,065 as its share of the gov ernment trapper's salary and $1,500 in mileage allowance. ments. The others couldn't be helped. If this is true-and I strong ly believe it is true-then our courts should stop being kind to young psychopathic crim inals, many of them so ex tremely dangerous to society that they should promptly be locked up and kept locked up-not for punishment but for the protection of our people. How I wish that some day we could get the idea of impris oning a mad-dog type of man -not to punish him, but to protect our young women.
