6 Catholic Bishop Writes Catechism On Race Relations By LOUIS CASSELS United Frets International The Most Rev. Albert L. Fletcher, Catholic bishop of Little Rock, Ark., has come up with a novel solution to a problem that concerns church leaders of all denominations in the North as well as the South. The problem is how to get across, to thinking adults, the full import of Christian teach ings about race relations. Bishop Fletcher's solution was to write a catechism. His newly-published "Ele mentary Catholic Catechism on the Morality of Segrega tion and Racial Discrimina tion" resembles superficially the catechisms which have been used for centuries in the religious training of children. Jt is cast in the customary format of questions and an swers. But it i written on the adult level, and is Intended primarily for use in adult discussion groups. . Catechisms are supposed to be forthright, and Bishop Fletcher has been true to that tradition. His little 17-page booklet minces no words. It states at the outset: "Segregation as we know it in Arkansas is immoral." Why is it immoral? "Because it discriminates unjustly and uncharitably against human beings on the basis of race alone." Here are some of the other questions and answers in the catechism: Q. What ' is the church's stand on racism? A. The church condemns racism as contrary to its teaching that all men are in herently and naturally equal, and have the same dignity as children of God; are derived from the same first human parents and are redeemed by the same Savior. Q. Does not history show that certain races and nation alities are superior to others? Methodists Tell Sunday Sermon "You Are Important" is the title of the sermon Dr. George C. Rosebcrry, minister of First Methodist church, will give Sunday. The youth choir will sing. "Cherubim Song" at the 9:30 a.m. worship service, and the soloist for the 11 a.m. wor ship service is Mrs. David Morgan, who will sing "The Lord Is My Light." The Older Youth will leave the church at 5:30 p.m. for a supper party at the home of Linda Luce on the Rogue River. Robert Duncan, speak er of the House of Represen tatives, will discuss "Chris tian and Politics." Tuesday, the commission on membership and evangelism, and the commission on stew ardship and finance will meet at 7:45 p.m. Thursday the Methodist Men meet for pot luck at 6:30 p.m. with Dr. Rosebcrry speaker. The com mission on missions will meet Thursday at 7:45 p.m. Fri day the Shipmate's class will meet for potluck at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hoppe, 305 Lozicr Lane, at 6:30 p.m. Seminary Student To Speak Sunday During the absence of the Rev. John E. Simon, who will be on vacation, John Kiiff ner, seminary student, will be jn charge of the services at St. Peter's Lutheran church, East Main st. and Vancouver ave. His sermon topic for Sunday's services at 8:15 and 31 a.m. is "Freedom in Christ." Because of the absence of the pastor, holy communion will not be celebrated. The next communion service is scheduled for Aug. 21 at 8:15 a.m. A special prayer of thanks giving will be read in both services for Mr. and Mrs. Walter A. Wood, 1101 Spring it., who observed their 50th wedding anniversary Thurs day. The third confirmation class of the year was con firmed at St. Peter's last Sun day by Pastor Simon. Certain races as a whole may, at a particular time in history, excel other races and nationalities as a whole, in material, intelluctual or social advancement: But in spite of these superior developments, or lack of them, the church has always taught that there is no fundamental difference between the races, which would make one race intrin sically superior or inferior to other races. Q. What is the habit of racial prejudice? A. ... a vice which inclines a person to prejudge a race or any of its members on the basis of race alone, without considering existing merits or demerits. Q. When is racial prejudice sinful? . A. It is a sin when a per son willfully gives consent to a feeling of racial prejudice or hatred, or by deliberate thoughts, desires, words, ac tions or omissions which the vice of prejudice inspires. Q. Can a person inclined to racial prejudice completely overcome, by an act of his will, any racial feelings he may have? A. He cannot destroy this feeling completely by a single act of his will. To root out this feeling will require time and many repeated acts of the will . . . Q. What is the most power ful directive a Christian man or woman has to practice racial justice and charily? A. Our Lord's own teach ing by word and example. Three Churches Announce Events Central Point - The Rev. Wednesday, Aug. 10, the young couples of the church will attend a supper and swim party at the George Flanagan home. Jacksonville - Sunday Dr. Clifford Miller, professor at Southern Oregon college, will be the pulpit guest at Jackson ville First Presbyterian church during the absence of Hie pastor, the Rev. King K. Jones. Mr. Jones will be in Ta- coma, Wash., as the official representative of the South west Oregon Presbytery to the second annual Pacific Northwest International World Mission conference. Phoenix - Communion Sun day will be held Aug. 7 at the Phoenix First Presby terian church. The Rev. William Saladin, pastor will give the com munion meditation based on the beatitudes entitled "Road to Blessedness." Prayer mid Bible study is held every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the manse. Men's Fellowship To Meet Saturday The Men's Fellowship of First Assembly of God, 1108 West Main si., will hold its regular monthly meeting to morrow at 7:45 p.m. in the church annex. According to Evan E. Rasmussen, Fellow ship president, a tape record ing produced by John Noble, who was imprisoned by the Russians in a slave labor camp, will be played. Refresh ments will be served at the close of the meeting. At Sunday's 11 a.m. com munion service, the Rev. R. E. Cull, pastor, will speak on the subject, "Glimpses of Glory." The Rogue valley's section al fellowship meeting for Assembly of God churches will be held Monday, Aug. 8, at the Phoenix Assembly. The Rev. Robert James, Butte Falls, will speak at the 2:30 p.m. service and the Rev. J. C. Amelt, Talent, will address the group at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to all services. Phoenix Church To Have Annual Picnic Phoenix - The annual pic nic of the Sunday school of Phoenix Church of the Niuar cne will be held Saturday at Jackson Hot Springs. A pro gram will begin at 5 p.m. with games of all kinds. The pot luck supper will be served at 7 p.m. CPrizes will be awarded win ners of the relays, it was an nounced. Children who plan to swim are reminded that they must have a written note from their parents, Qr Pastor Returns To Christian for Sunday Service The Rev. Frederick Ross Evans will be back Sunday to preach at both services at the First Christian church. He has been in Corbett, Ore., for the past two weeks con ducting a preaching mission, His subject will be "The Mo tivating Go." At the first service the youth choir will sing the an them "Every Moment of Every Day." Mrs. William A. Palmer wil sing a solo at the 10:55 a.m. service. There will be no Christian Youth Fellowship meeting Sunday evening. They are at Squaw Lake for the week end on a planning retreat. The Chi Rho Fellowship will meet at 7 p.m. Paul Branchficld will present the study and Norman Campbell will be in charge of the wor ship period. Tuesday there will be a joint meeting of all elders and deacons at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Planning Retreat The church is planning to hold an all-day planning re treat Saturday in Lithia park, Ashland, beginning at 9:15 a.m. Dr. Lawrence M. Bix- Ier, Northwest Christian col lege, will speak on the sub ject "The Importance of the Functional Program to the Church Today" at the morn ing session. Each department of the church wil have a plan ning workshop. Acting as moderators for these will be Dr. and Mrs. Bixler; Doyle Dobbins, director of Religious Education at the First Chris tian church, Roseburg; James Cornell, Grants Pass; Mr. Evans, the Rev. Glenn Mc- Kerrow, and Wayne Wake field. A picnic lunch will be served at noon, and reports of the departments will be given during the afternoon sessions. All members of the church arc invited to attend. Adventists Plan Vacation School Eagle Point-Children of the community, ages 4 to 14, are invited to attend a two-week vacation Bible school spon sored by the Eagle Point Sev-enlh-day Advcntist church. It will be held in the new wing of the Eagle Point grade school, beginning Monday, Aug. 8. Enrollment will be held at 8:45 a.m. Monday. Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to 12 noon week days, stressing craft and will Include nature study as well as Biby study. Primary and junior stu dents will have a workbook made up of puzzles, comple tion tesls, and other exercises. Mrs. David Morgan, Shady Cove, will be in charge of the school. There is no charge for en rollment in the Vacation Bible school. Each child, however, should be accom panied by an adult for enroll ment on opening day. Grad uation exercises will be held at the close of the two-week school. Children of any faith may attend. St. Luke's Tells Sunday Activities The church school and the worship service will be held at 9 and 10 a.m., respectively, Sunday at St. Luke's Method ist church, 2940 Siskiyou blvd. During the service the pastor, the Rev. Melvin Dixon, will preach the sermon on "Three of a Kind!" Miss Karen Paschke will sing the solo, "Behold What Manner of Love." Junior church Is held for first through fourth graders and supervised nursery is provid ed for pre-school children. The commission on Chris tian education will meet Monday at 8 p.m. Tuesday the missions commission will meet at 7:30 p.m., the finance commission at 8 p.m. and the official board at 8:30 p.m. Youth Leader To Be Guest Speaker llombrook Bob Buckner, youth leader of Yreka Meth odist church, will speak Sun day at Hornbrook Methodist church. The pastor, the Rev. William C. Odgcn, is attend ing College of Pacific for three weeks. Mr. Buckner Is a son of the Rev. Hartzell Buckner, pastor of the Yreka church for a number of years. Last Sunday during the ab sence of the pastor lay mem ber of the church conducted the service. MEDFGHD MAIL 1957 Award of Merit Winner Medford Presbyterians Announce Sunday Events; Week's Activities Told College Sunday will be ob served at the First Presby terian church with the mes sage being brought by Bruce West and Dwain Epps. "Who Do Men Say That I Am?" will be the subject of Bruce West's talk and Dwain Epps will speak on, "Who Do You Say That I Am?" The Geneva choir will sing the anthem, "All Creatures of Our God and King" for both morning services and Otis Swisher, tenor, will sing the solo, "Sweet Little Jesus Boy." The emphasis of the Geneva Fellowship this summer has been service and witness, an attempt to express Christian concern for others. The choir has sung at Brookings and small deputation teams have traveled to Oakland, Ore., Boy Scout Camp at Lake of the Woods to lead worship services and youth meetings, Future assignments will take the team to Klamath Falls and Central Point. 'Great Love' Is Sunday Subject "His Great Love" will be the subject of the message given by Pastor Edward Stauffcr at the 11 a.m. wor ship hour of the First Baptist church Sunday. Choral and solo numbers will be presented by the adult choir. Mrs. Albert Gandt is organist and Miss Diane Franklin, pianist. The morning service will conclude with the observance of the Lord's Table and re ception of new members into the church. Twenty adults and young people are to re ceive the right hand of fellow ship, welcoming them into the church. Youth groups for those from junior through college age are to meet at the church at 6:30 p.m. The adult Bible study taught by Albert Gandt meets at the same hour. The musical program of the evening service, which be gins at 7:45 p.m., will be di rected by Ned Landers and will include a number by the youth choir. Pastor Stauf fer's message will be entitled, "Down From His Glory." Fireside for young people of junior high, senior high, and college age will be held following the evening service at the John Clark home, 605 Berrydale ave. Minister To Attend State Campmeeting The Rev. W. E. Martin, pastor of First Church of God, Haven at Holly sis., will leave Monday to attend the Oregon State Campmeeting of the Church of God to be held at Clackamas, Aug. 7-14. Guesl minister will be the Rev. Royce W. Blackwelder, Erie, Pa., who will be in charge of evangelistic serv ices. He is the author of "Light From the Greek New Testament." Youth Rally Set In Grants Pass The Inter mediates and Young People of the Siskiyou association of Southern Bap tist churches will hold a rally at the First Baptist church, Grants Pass, tonight at 7:30 o'clock. Max Parker will speak and a program will be presented. Young people of the local church will present a skit during the fellowship hour. Cars will leave the church, 794 Lozier lane, at 6:30 o'clock. Chaplin Roger Pr-, in terim pastor, will conduct both the morning and evening services at the Medford church Sunday. His topic for the morning service will be "A Bundle of Sticks." During the service he will speak on "Divine Symbols." TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, ORE, CHURCH NEWS National Religious Publicity Council On July 29, Geneva led the evening at the Medford Gos pel Mission and on Aug. 28 they will sing and lead the morning worship service at the Jacksonville Presbyterian church. A College Presbytery conference sponsored by Med ford and Roseburg will be held Aug. 19 to 21 at YMCA camp, Diamond Lake. Reynolds is on vacation. Mr. Kinsler is a recent grad uate of Princeton Theological seminary and summer assist ant at First Presbyterian church. Sunday Mr. Kinsler will begin a series on "The Christian Concept of Love." Love and Fellowship With God" is the title of the mes sage for Sunday; on Aug. 14 it will be "The Love of the Cross" and on Aug. 28, "God Is Love."
