MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3, I960 0 o ita4jTO mmM9' "H 0 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, ORE. 3 8 A Worlds SslAround By lynn M. Welkins There Show Off. in The Animal World, Too Showing off is not solely a human trait. There are any number of "crutups" in the animal world that seem just as anxious to display their talents. The dividing line between brazen exhibitionism and ac tual playfulness is, at times, pretty thin. Many male birds "show off" to please or (.fas cinate the lady of their choice. This of course, is hardly "showing off" as we inter pret the meaning; rather it is a personal display of in dividual charms. The peacock doesn't intend to make a speS $acle of himself; he is inter ested only in conquest. Heal 'Show-offs' me real "show-offs" are thiffie who put on demonstra tions for the amusement of others, or because they feel so good can hardly control themselves. In the animal world there are some that deliberately become "smant ics" only when someone is watching. O Dogs, monkeys, parro8, rac coons, otters, as well as many others often will make them selves actually conspicuous by staging some sort of exhibi tion to be amusing, or to gain a reward fo9 their per formtaice. There are some that cSneOclose to being come dians, always playing for the grandstand. One of these easily can be the porpoise. Tlae charter plays the part of the clown at every opportunity. He will go into his act whenever he has an audience. He's a natural show-off, and apparently0 gets a big kick out of displaying his accomplishments. The barnyard rooster awak ens early in the morning full of enthusiasm and good spirits. He actually is "show-ing-off" every time he opens his mouth, throCs his head lOick and crows. Of course he does it only for the hoped-for admiration of his flock, not caring a feather Ohether or not his real owner is satis fied or agreeable. Dogs and MfttdOayi The family dog will display his talents at the slightest provocation. To please his master or mistress he will eargerly make a fool of him self. The monkeys are notor ious show-offs. At the itther extreme sjid on the serious side are the majryity of creatures that seem timid and reserved. They are reluctant to be in the limelight. The house cat seldom displays her talents. If she does she only performs lor nor own personal satis faction. The rabbits, squirrels, in fact ao the rooYnt family, glways seem too reserved to soow-off. To them life is a serious business. In a moment of , carelessness they could "gist it In tlie neck." They cannot afford to become a spectacle. Parent Should Answer Questions Completely One of the most important" contributions a parent can make toward helping a child learn is to answer his ques tions as completely as pos sible, e But. try also to fan his cur iosity and guide him to books that will help him find ut more for himself. . If you do not have time to answer right at that moment, make a mental or pencil note anr1 answer as soon as possible. Never underestimate the value of family conferences. By giving the child a feeling that he has taken part in de ciding family "policy" he will be en 00 ur aged to comply. ov.. - -7-5 i1t7- TiTUTZ." RUInllCTv I PICNIC h'm,,, i mi Rl I W &Z27l..
