ROBERT SMITH Mail Tribune Washington Correspondent - (Editor's note: Our Washington correspondent is browsing around Oregon. From Crater Lake he has sent off a note to Congressman Charles O. Porter, advocate of the controversial monorail to take tourists down 'to the edge of ;raier Lascj i Crater Lake - Dear Charlie: I've just taken a scientific sampling, as the pollsters al ways describe it, of public opinion on the burning issue of -that aerial gondola you have been urging to be built here to take visitors down to the edge of the A. Bobt- smith lake. ' Everyone included in this scientific sampling was strong ly for it. They weren't passive about it either. Your idea for a monorail down to the lake came from a visit to Disneyland, as I re call. Right? Well, they've added a submarine ride at Dis neyland this year that is a real crowd puller. Put a sub with port holes in Crater Lake, and stock the lake with sharks - it would be a sensa tion. Talk about a wilderness area; man, this would be the wildest! But, let's face it, the gar den club ladies will kick up a storm that will be hard for you to ride out. So you should keep a diversionary tactic or two in reserve. As Bad as Freeway First, you could focus at tention on the huge number of cars coming into Crater Lake park. It's getting nearly as bad as the Los Angeles freeway. Next thing you know with all these cars, Crater Lake will have a smog prob lem. Can't you imagine the signs along the road saying: "Cut off your motor; coast down hills to hold down smog." Then, while the ladies are diverted by this into a full throated outcry against auto- mobiles, point out that Crater Lake is changing coIqt! It is no longer as blue as it once was. It's taking on a chrom ium look. - reflections from $4770 Intoxicated Man Kicks Policewoman Medford's new and only policewoman, Officer Hilde Prom, started learning her duties the hard way Monday. She was involved in a fight. Officer Prom, and another officer had been summoned to the corner of Eight st. and Central ave., yesterday after noon on a report of a drunk person in that location. The two officers found Paul Macauley Charlton, White City, in an apparent intoxi cated condition, and arrested him on a charge of drunk in public. Charlton was placed in the patrol car, from which he al legedly made a break for for freedom by trying to jump out the back door. He was put back in the patrol car and handcuffed. At the station, Charlton reached over the back seat of the patrol car and reportedly kicked Officer Prom in the head. The blow was of suf ficient force to knock Miss Prom against the windshield. Macauley was again sub dued and placed in jail. Other than being a little dizzy, Officer Prom appeared none the worse for wear this morning and seemed anxious to get back on the job. Macauley entered a plea of all those shiny house trailers that are being hauled into the park camps. See the possibilities? Then you propose that only horses and pack mules be allowed into the park! Master stroke. This would solve both prob lems and eliminate most of those tourists who are lous ing up the wilderness. About the time this storm breaks, and threatens the auto clubs, the trailer makers and the other vested interests, you can surely make a deal to support trailer camps and cars - if only they will back your monorail and submarine idea.
