They are "the little old men" of the garden and the pasUrJ) and belong to a peculiar class of animals known as the "arach nids." There are some peculiar characters in this grot - the scorpions, ticks and spiders. Those of us who would not know the harvestmcn as "lit tle old men" would recognize them as "daddy longlcgs." The harvestman is spider like in appearance and rela tionship, with a body about the size of an aspirin tablet and suspendcdOamong eight long legs. With its two fore legs, the little creature is al ways and forever pointing out something that seems invisi ble to anyone else. Or per haps, in pantomime, the dad dy longlcgs is indicating to others of his kind - those that understand his sign language -lhal something or ot'Or of Importance is "over there." Point Out Cows Some farm boys used to have the idea the harvestman would indicate, by pointing its forelegs, the direction to take to find the cattle in the "back forty." Some always consulted the nearest daddy longlcgs before they started out looking for the cattle. The harvestman would rare back on its six rear legs and point with the two forward ones. These "little old men" usu ally were plentiful during the late summer, and probably for that reason were called "harvestmcn." The farm boys of course called it an insect or a long-legged spider, which was a little closer to the true facts. The harvestman is really long-legged; the legs arc all out of proporti'0 to the size of the creature. The legs are actually "seven league boots," allowing the little f low to make amazing speed and to perform "tight-rope walking" and other acrobat ics that would make a human aerialist green with envy. Hunts at Night Children have always af fectionately called the little guy "daddy gray beard." Spider-like, the daddy longlcgs hunts mostly at night, feeding on plant lice and scale insects. Probably its only protection as the eight legs; their great length keeps the soft body out of harm's way. However, these legs are a little difficult to manage, as their excessive length causes them to become entangled in every spider web, and then the spider cats "the harvestman." The joints in the legs of daddy longlegs are miracles of perfection. "Cuter than a bug's ear" falls short when describing anything as deli cate. Imagine a "knee-cap" in a leg joint smaller than a hu man hair; yet they work with a quiet, efficient smoothness. There are usually many of these "little old men" in every garden and every pasture, alongside the road and in ev ery vacant lot. Watch them quietly sitting on a plant stem .th their slender forelegs waving gently in one or more direclicCK Irying to tell them selves - or whoever will look that there is something real ly important going on "over there."
