SUNDAY, JULY 31, 1060 Atkinson Files Entry In SO Golf Rogue Valley Country Club's Southern Oregon Golf tournament, one of the Pacif lc Northwest's most popular links events, picked up some lidded prestige last week for its 1860 competition when en tries of Bob Atkinson and Mrs. Tom- (Margaret) Harri son were received. ' Atkinson Inst June won the Oregon Golf association match play diadem for the third time. Mrs. Harrison was runner-up earlier this month for the Pacific Northwest am ateur crown. A three-times winner also, of the Southern Oregon, in 1951, 1952 and 1955, Atkinson plays out of Portland Golf Club. His other state titles were in 1951 and 1958. Mrs. Harrison's club is Waverly of Portland. The 32nd annual tourney on the Medford course is sched uled Aug. 31 through Sept. 5, Labor day. Approximately 180 entries are now on hand. Deadline for filing is Aug. 24 Playeis will contend for men's, senior men s and ladies' titles. Champions in 1959 were Bob Prall, Salem; Karl Ben nett, Grants Pass; and Miss Betty Martin, Longview, Wash., respectively. Among most recent entrants are Miss Shirley Siegmund, Eugene, and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Scott, Jim Snider and Dean Child, Portland. Miss Sieg mund was medalist in 1955. Mrs. Scott, Eastmoreland, is a perennial contender in the women's meet. Snider, an ex- Medford reesident, Columbia Edgewater, and Child, are two-handicappers. Mouths were briefly agape when RVCC reported the en try of Bob Hope. Officials ex plained that the golfer- is Rob ert A. Hope, of Oakway Club, Eugene, and not the famed comedian. Stewart To Coach IV In Football Bill Stewart, line coach of St. Mary's high 1959 state B football championship team, will take over the duties of head football coach at Illinois Valley high of Cave Junction this fall. Stewart will succeed Eldon Durham who has been named head basketball coach at Phoenix. A 1960 graduate of South ern Oregon college, Stewart also will tutor wrestling. He will teach geography, science and mathematics. Stewart was a three year letterman football lineman at Southern Oregon. He gave up a fourth season of eligibility to coach the Crusaders. The new IV coach is a grad uate of Lakeview High school. Central Point Players Start Fund Campaign Central Point - Central Point Crater Cubs conducted car wash and shoe shine proj ects yesterday, opening a fund-raising drive. Should the Cubs gain a berth in the Oregon Junior Baseball association tourney, the money will be used for that trip. Otherwise, cam paign proceeds will be used to purchase new uniforms. On Monday, Aug. 1, players will have a door-to-door pop sale. Large bottles will sell for $1 each. Two days later on Wednesday, Aug. 3, they will stage an empty bottle drive. An all - summer recreation picnic is scheduled for Fri day, Aug. 5. Food will be contributed and money 'dona tions will be accepted from -those attending the event. A baked food sale, with Mrs. Willie, Jones in charge, and another car wash are planned next Saturday. Mrs. John Summerfield has charge of a rummage sale planned for Aug.' 10. Three games on Monday evening will wrap the regular twice around play in the coun ty association with the excep tion of a Timber Products Butte Falls make-up tangle. Church league rivalry is to be terminated Tuesday with a four-game titular playoff. Alignment of teams for the county loop playoff will be determined by the outcome of games on the regular sched ule. It had been hoped that runoffs could be concluded Waelty, B ransom Outstanding Junior Performers Saturday In All-Comers Track Affair John Waelty, Eagle Point, and Paul Bransom, Central Point, were outstanding per formers at yesterday's all comer junior track meet held in Ashland on the Southern Oregon college oval. Waelty took si first and two thirds in the 11 and 12 year age group. Bransom placed first in five events and third in another. He competed in the 13 and 14 year age class. Rick Lewis, Medford, was tops in the 10 and under win ning four firsts, Gil Smith, Grants Pass, gained three first in the 15 and 16 year division. Kathy Lewes, Eagle Point, gained two firsts in the girls 10 and under group, ana Sherry Blackledge, Medford, took four firsts in the 11 and 12 year division. Timber Products and Che ney Studs vie at 7 p.m. Mon day and Lithia Lumber and Civil Service meet at the samp time in the JCSA. Butte Falls and S and W Floor Covering are set for the 9 p.m. skirmish. It's uncertain when Timber Products and Butte Falls will clash. The clubs were not able to get together last Thursday and a Friday action was rained out. Lithia Lumber. S and W and Butte Falls are sure of playoff spots. Cheney can get the other by beating Timber Products on Monday but TP has a chance for a tie for the spot if it beats the Studs. Who plays who in the first round of the four-team titular tour ney depends on the order of finish in regular play. Lithia has No. 1 spot nailed down. In the Church league ses sion on Tuesday First Baptist will oppose First Methodist and Latter Day Saints will tackle Phoenix Presbyterian in simultaneous first games. Quillian, Perry Vie for Title Seattle-TJPI-Seattle's first seeded Bill Quillian and col legiate Norm Perry of Los Angeles moved into the sin gles finals of the 70th annual Washington State tournament here Saturday with victories over two California college players. First-seeded Quillian de feated third-seeded Bob Del- gado of Los Angeles, 6-2, 6-2, and 6-4, while Perry, second seeded, beat Jim Jeffries, Vancouver, B. C, 7-5, 6-2, and 6-3. Perry was a member of the UCLA tennis team which took the NCAA tennis title here last month. Both Delgado of USC, and Jeffries, Stanford, played in that tournament. Quillian and Perry meet tomorrow for the title. In women's play, second seeded Connie Jaster of Brea, Calif., upset first-seeded An drea Miller, San Carlo, Calif., 6-3, 6-0, 0-6 and 6-3 to take the junior women's singles title. The same two will meet to morrow for the women's sin gles title. Oregon Cowboys Lead Spokane Riding Events Spokane (UPJ1 Two Oregon cowhands lead the bronc rid ing events of the 11th annunl Diamond Spur rodeo after first go-rounds last night. Bob Swain, Arlington, rode War Dance for 178 points to top the bareback event. He drew Wild Boy for his second go-round. Intermediate leaguers mix on Monday with the Ashland Cardinals at Medford Giants, Central Point Rams at Ash land Dodgers and Medford Yankees at Central Point Stars. This will end these teams' regular schedule ex cept for games matching the two Medford teams and the two Ashland nines. Ashland teams are to meet each other Wednesday. Pee Wee league clubs open playoffs on Tuesday, Aug. 2, with the southern division winning Medford Tigers going to Jacksonville and the north ern division topping Central Point Braves entertained by the Medford Wildcats. Win ners of these two games col lide Thursday for the cham pionship. Losers meet for third place. Eagle Point pee wees tied with Jacksonville for second in the northern division of their circuit. Jacksonville enters the playoffs because EP has discontinued play. Cub Plans Told Final ruckus on the regu lar Cub loop slate will take the Central Point Crater Cubs to Eagle Point on Wednesday. If Crater wins, as expected, that will tie the Central Point and Medford clubs for the title and mean a playoff to determine who meets Grants Pass for the right to enter the Oregon Junior association tourney. This Medford-CP extra tus sle, if needed, has been set tentatively for Friday night, Aug. 5, at Memorial stadium, White City. There is some un certainty, aside from the out come of the loop, on Medford state tourney entry. The Crater Cubs are eager to go, however, if they can make the grade. They were 1959 champions. The representative from the local league is to open a two of three runoff with Grants Pass at Grants Pass at 2 p.m. on Aug. 8 with the second game to be at White City at 8 p.m. on Aug. 9. If a third tilt is required, its time and location will be determined after the second fracas. Dairy Maids Tussle KF Rogue Valley Dairy Maids, who complete a series with the McCulloch Chain team to day in the Northwest Wom en's Major Softball league, will face three more foes be fore entering the state tour nament at Salem . They will entertain Klam ath Falls Basinettcs at Memor ial stadium, White City, on Thursday, will encounter Bremerton, Wash., on the same field on Saturday night and will entertain the Red ding,, Calif., Comets on Sun day, Aug. 7. The stale tourney will open on Friday, Aug. 12, with just four teams entered. The Dairy Maids will face Eugene in the opening round of the double elimination event and Salem will meet Klamath Falls. At last report the Comets had a 15-6 record for the sea son. A report from Redding states that the Comets have played "all the bigger teams down south." Sharp Hurls No-Hitter Central Point - Doug Sharp hurled a no-hit, no-run game Friday as the second place Central Point Rams stayed in Southern Oregon Interme diate league baseball title run ning by blanking the Central Point Stars 9 to 0. Sharp struck out seven bat ters and walked five. The Rams collected only three hits, themselves, but had the benefit of nine bases on balls and eight Star errors. They stole 11 bases.
