the Federal Space Agency
said.
The National Aeronautics
and Space Administration said
several large pieces of the
bell-shaped capsule were
found about five miles off
shore in approximately 50
feet of water.
The sections were returned
to Cape Canaveral for ex
amination and analysis.
Lot Better Shape .
"This leaves us in a helluva
lot better shape than we were
this time this morning," one
source close to the Mercury
program said.
The Mercury capsule, which
will carry an astronaut to the
edge of space early next year
and into orbit sometime in
late 1961, was launched
aboard an Atlas missile in a
driving rain Friday morning
in its most Important test to
date.
However, the experiment
failed when the Atlas booster
blew up about 65 seconds
after blast off. Officials said
it had not been determined
what caused the explosion.
An intensive search for the
wreckage was immediately
launched.
NASA said 3Vi minutes of
in-flight telemetry data and
preliminary examination ol
the wreckage indicated the
capsule probably hit the wa
ter intact, and then was torn
apart. The telemtry Included
the time from blast off
through the capsule's plunge
into the ocean.
It was reported the recov
ered wreckage included "sev
eral large pieces" such as the
heavy heat shield a the base

Officials declined to say
when a repeat of the shot

day In Washington in which
the department said it was
"satisfied" thot Belgian gov
ernment sent Its troops back
Into the strife-torn Congo only
to protect lives and "had no
aggressive Intent."
"Give mo the name of the
man' In ' the state department
who said this, Lumumba said.
"I. do not want or like the
state department to be slandered."
