MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. ORE. WEDNESDAY, JULY 27, 10eCWEDNE8DAY, JULY 27, 1SIK MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. ORE. A Family Council Editor's Note: The ramlly Coun cil comliti of a JuSie, psychia trist, three eleriymen, newspaper editor, women's editor end two writers. Each initio Is summary t an arlual COIO history. ThO Council reports on problems that have been dealt wun oy reiponsipn lender, and counselors Jill B. - Ann complains too much. , Ann H. - She's too com plaisant. .. . , Jill B. - My friend Ann and I are both single girls in our mld-20s. We get along very well and have enjoyed double dating and going on short vacations together. Ann, however, has one habit which annoys me and I've been trying to get her to correct it before we go on our summer vacation. She is pleasant enough when we go someplace or are active, but she is constantly complaining when there is nothing to do. I can just loaf in the sun or read a book, but she bites her nails and keeps saying we should do something about picking up and going else where. She also is very critical of everyone we meet and keeps saying we aren't in the right crowd. I feel you have to take your chances. o Ann R. - Jill takes it very seriously when I complain to her, but I've tried to explain that it's not so important as all that. I .find that at times I have to let off a little steam. I do feel Jill and I aren't doing very well socially. We don't seem to be attracting the better type men and all too often get involved with jerks and wolves. Jill just shrugs her shoulders and says "better luck next time," but I can't be like that. It makes me sore to see much less at tractive girls walk off with all the best guys. Both Jill and I dress well, are good dancers, go in for all sports -yet we don't seem to be get ting anywhere. I guess I just want to needle Jill a little because she is much too complaisant. The Council: We'll agree that it is better for a dis contented person to let off steam in complaints than bot tle his miseries. But this be havior isn't fair to others and it accomplishes little. The chronic complainer has found that he can make him self feel a little better by let ting off steam. Then he settles back in satisfaction for a while - until his discontent begins seething within him agan. He would do far better to save his steam to change things. Ann, for example, could use her energy to far better ad vantage by studying her prob lem and doing something to improve her lot. Instead of envying the girls who "walk off with the best guys," she might try to find out where and how they met and what assets the other girls had, aside from appearance, that might have attracted the bet ter men. Ann has attached herself to Jill and acts as if all depends upon arousing her friend from her complaisance. But Jill may have good reason for her attitude. Perhaps she feels the men sh meets are not so very undesirable and has good reason to expect to find a husband among them. Possibly Ann is more am bitious or simply has different tastes. If that is the case, she Is foolish to limit her social activities to those which satis fy her friend. She is a free agent and should do some thing to find the social ele ment she prefers.
