Ss SP 3-6247 'Glamor Race1 Hopes By HOWARD APPLEGATE Unitad Praia International Eugene, Ore. - IUPD - When It comes to the toy "glamor race" of the Olympic games, the 1,500 meter run, the United States has been a com plete Clop for 52 years. Not since "peerless" Mel Shcppard captured the so called metric mile in 1908 has an American finished first in this most coveted of -II races, even though the United States has dominated almost every other event In Olympic track and field. Glenn Cunningham was figured as a probable victor for the United States when the 1036 Olympics was held under Adolf Hitler's scowling gaze in Berlin, but Cunning ham - holder of the world mile record - was whipped by Jack Lovelock of New Zea land. Unheralded Bob McMillln came close at Helsinki in 1952, but lost by an eyelash to Josy Barthel of Luxem burg. Delaney Was Irish American fans got some thing of a thrill In 1058 when Ron Delany, a student at Philadelphia's Villanova uni versity, won the glamor gal lop at Melbourne, but Delany was running for his homeland - Ireland. And so, 52 years after Shcp pard and 24 years after Cun ningham, the United States comes to another Olympic games and puts its hopes for an Olympic 1,500 meter tri umph on a 20-year-old boy. Thin, quiet Dyrol Burleson, who will be a junior at the University of Oregon when he returns from the games in Rome this fall, qualifies for all the hope being placed in him because he is the only American who has broken four minutes for the mile twice. Also on the U.S. team for this evening is Jim Grelle, Burleson's brilliant teammate at Oreiton, and Marine Lieut. Pete Close from St. John's, N.Y. But track experts are agreed that any hopes the United States may have of upsetting defending champion Delany, world mile record holder Herb Elliott of Australia, and a number of European stars must rest on the shoulders of Burleso. . Can Burley do it? Will Grow Stronger He's not a bragger, but he thinks he can. So does his coach, Bill Bowerman of Ore gon, although actually both think he still may be a year away from an all-out assault on Elliott's 3:54,5 world rec ord for the mile. "I'll be a year older next year, and should be a lot stronger," Burleson points out. But Burleson also indicates in his quiet way that he Is sure he can do better than he already has done. When he broke the American record for the mile with a 3:58.6 clocking, 1 c commented, "I can run faster." When little Jim Beatty of the Santa Clara Youth Village who will run in the 5,000 meters in the Olympics beat him and ran 3:58.0 to break Burleson's record, Burley said dryly, "I made some mis takes." Burleson was timed in 3:59.2 in that race. For all the talk about El liott and all the respect that Burleson has for the Aussie star, Burleson figures that Delany will be the man to beat in Rome, simply because the Irish bog-Jumper Is the defending champion and a U.S. Davis Cup Team Selected San Francisco CtTPD T h e U.S. Davis Cup Selection com mittee has picked Barry Mac- Kay, Bernard Barizen, Earl Bucholz Jr. and Charles Mo Kinley for a match with Mexico Aug. 6-8. Chairman James B. Moffett said Monday that the Mexican match, which will be played at an altitude of almost 8,000 feet, is one of the toughest as signments in tennis. This is especially true, he said, because the current Mexican team is the strongest ever to represent that coun try. The U.S. team left Sun day so it will have 11 days to get acclimated.
