The nuts that grow under ground arc going to become pretty Important. With an Increasing number of muutln to feed, peanuts may be part of the answer. They could supply a fat-deficient world an essential Ingredient. They are rich In oils, and they can become an exhaustible sup ply of fats. Peanuts only re quire six months of growing season, and the tonnage per acre Is enormous. Brmllian Origin Originally peanuts came from Drni.ll. They were later planted extensively In Vir ginia. Soldiers became famil iar with these soft-shelled nuts during the Civil War and demanded them after they re turned to their homes. Pan nuts became very popular. A ball game or a Saturday night In a small town became a Joyous occasion merely by the purchase of a five cent bag of peanuts. Then someone discovered vitamins, and that peanuts contained a great many of these things. Experiments with pcanuls were revealing. It was found that these ground nuts have many qualities that place It high In usefulness. Once a palatable breakfast food was made from the ker nel Itself, and the soft shell promises to be of considerable commercial importance. Peanut shells can be made Into long lasting shoe polish. This discovery may have help ed cancel out the possibility of the shells being made Into breakfast food. What may have been a delicious cereal became a little nauseating, and the breakfast food Idea went a-gllnimerlng. Roasted peanut seeds have been used as a substitute for coffee. They have been used as a poultry food, as well as a milk that is comparable with cow's milk. Some parts of the lowly peanut even went Into manufacturing of "meat sauces." Peanuts sup ply a generous supply. of futs for the making of soaps. Second Crop The vines of the peanut crop make one of the best dairy and livestock feeds. The peanut vines could almost be considered to be a second crop,' as they are used up after the valuable nut Is pro cessed, And peanuts will yield more "crop'l to the acre of ground than any seed known. Some areas could pro duce threo or four crops In a single year.
