Minoso Leads Sox Into First Place, 7th Straight Win By Unittd Pri International Minnie Minoso personally led the Chicngo White Sox into first place Saturday and to their seventh straight vic tory with four hits and three runs batted-in for a 5-3 dect Ion over the stumbling New York Yankees, : It marked the first time the White Sox took over the American league lead since May 24 and also the first time the Yankees moved out of it lince June 26. Minoso was chiefly rcspon alble for both accomplish ments with a double and three singles. He tied the score at 1-1 in the fifth inning with a single, then produced a two-run sin gle during a sixth-inning four run rally that clinched the game for the Sox. Bob Shaw, with relief from Gerry Staley in the ninth in ning, recorded his ninth vic tory although roughed up for 10 hits, including Bill Show ron's 18th homer with the bases empty in the eighth. Whitey Ford, who was knock ed out in the sixth, suffered his sixth loss against the same number of victories. A crowd of 28,402 watched the Yankees drop their ninth game in their last 12 starts Senators Boat A's The Washington Senators beat the Kansas City Athle tics, 8-3, with the aid of the first triple play of the Amer ican league season. Walt Moryn's two-run hom er in the 10th inning enabled St. Louis to beat Cincinnati, 7-5. Marichal, who beat Phila delphia with a one-hitter in his big league debut last Tues day, lost his bid for a shutout in the seventh inning when Rocky Nelson singled and scored on a double by Smoky Burgess. Marks Fall In Junior Track Test Rick Lewis led an assault on the records in the events held at the all-comers track meet at Medford High school yesterday morning. Rick broke four of the 13 records that were bettered. Lewis bettered marks in the 75-yard dash, the low hurdles, the high jump, and the broad jump, in the 10 and under age group. Another record broken was in the 10 and under boys 220 oy Jay Corey, Ashland. In the 11 and 12-year-old boys group Jim Cox knocked a sec ond off the low hurdles stand ard and Jack Mullen and Den nis Bolz improved the pole vault record by three inches. in the 13 and 14 age group onerm rugcr of Gold Hill tied the record in the 75 and in the 15 and 16 class Don Garrison set a new top at 5-11 in the high jump. A pair of five-run innings, the fifth and sixth, deter mined the outcome, Darrell Summerfield tossed a two-hitter for the Rams and Doug Sharp swatted three of the winner's seven safeties. One was a double. Larry Mason, pitching for the Stars, struck out 13 bat ters in defeat. He walked six. Mason got the only hits for his team, a triple and a sin gle. Garnet This Week The Rams will try to make the most of an opportunity to move into lone second place Monday afternoon. They will be hosts to the Ashland Dod gers for a doubleheader. One contest is a makeup game. Other teams of the loop have single skirmishes, Ashland Cardinals at Medford Giants and Medford Yankees at the Stars. The two Ashland clubs will have night action on Wednesday at the high school football field.
