MEDFORD MAIL, Committee Okays Increase in Hatfield's Staff Salem IUPD - Increasing the governor's staff to meet a mushrooming workload was endorsed by the governor's advisory committee on gov ernment reorganization. Slate Finance Director Free man Holmcr said the chief ex ecutive should have at least four more special assistants and at least two more secre taries. The assistants would be as signed to oversee for the gov ernor operations in four areas: 1. Education and social services; 2. Natural resources; :t. Labor, commerce and in dustry, and 4. Transportation and public safety. The committee held up fi nal determination as to how much more of a staff the gov ernor should have pending their overall decisions on re organization of Oregon's gov ernment. Headed by former Gov. Jackson Fourth In Retail Sales Jackson county ranks fourth In rctull (ales volume in the state, according to in formation from the Portland field office, U. S. Department of Commerce. The Information was based on tho 1058 census of retail trade in Oregon. The Medford Chamber of Commerce is a cooperative office of the U. S. department, maintaining files and information on economic trends for public use. "Medford and Jackson county have enjoyed a rather stable growth in retail vol ume," Chamber Manager Don McNeil said. The 10S4 business . census on retailing indicates a total volume of $75,443,000, com pared .with the 1058 retail volume of $86,172,000. This represents an Increase during the four-year period of 14.2 per cent. Oregon's growth In retailing has been 11.2 per cent for the same period, the local mana ger added. During the last four years, Jackson county maintained fourth place in to tal retail dollar volume among Oregon counties. A pamphlet showing the 1958 report with complete breakdowns on individual sales quotas may be obtained through the local chamber of commerce, McNeil said. Miss Johnson, executive sec retary of the Oregon State Council on Aging, said, "Our council feels that no one wants to be segregated and set back in a corner because of age." The council official men tioned the reluctance of peo ple - men, as well as women -even to thing about aging. Something should be done, she said, to try to erase this reluctance.
