Now, as never before, the Democratic party leadership shl.ts to t h e Senate where three sitting senators have taken all the scats of com mand. Kennedy, Johnson and Jackson represent the clean est break the party has made with its pnst leaders Tru man, Achoson & Co. Whether Kennedy wins or loses, a now generation of Democrats is taking hold of the party ma chinery. Ticklish Problem In developing with Kenne dy the strategy of their com ing campaign, one of Jack son's most ticklish problems may lie in his own state of Washington. Religious factors have not before plagued elec tions in that state, but this year may test Washington's voters as never before. All the top Democrats on the ticket from Kennedy to Gov. Albert Roscllin through the higher state officials arc Cotholics. That is one reason why Washington stale Democrats put on such a strenuous cam paign In behalf of Jackson for vice president, for they were sure his name on the ticket would offset any resistance among Washington state vot ers to supporting a heavily Catholic ticket. Jackson has agreed to lake this assignment for the dura tion of the campaign only. But If Kennedy emerges victori ous, It Is conceivable Jackson will be given a cabinet post, possibly secretary of defense. Stereotyper To Appear for Sentence Oregon City (UPD- Levi S. McDonald Is scheduled to ap pear in Clackamas county cir cuit court July 29 for senten cing in connection with the Jan, 31 dynamiting of six Wy- morc Transfer Co. trucks serving two struck Portland dailies. McDonald was convicted in Oregon City June 30. He had previously been sentenced to serve 10 years in the state penitentiary and was fined $500 May 13 in Multnomah county circuit court on a sim ilar charge. The Multnomah county sen. fencing came after he was found guilty of mastermind ing the dynamiting of four Oregon Film Service trucks. Income bracket senior citizens A maximum annual Income of $3,200 will be set for eligibil ity. If senior citizens make over this amount of money yearly then they have lo com pete on the private housing market, he said. By setting this maximum income, he said, the housing authority insures itself that it will not be competing on the private housing market. The people with these low incomes could not afford to buy in that market anyway, he added. Cost of Ranting Cost of renting the units will be 20 per cent of the person's annual income. The authority has figured that it will need to charge $30 per month per unit to keep the housing development on a self-sustaining basis. The units arc built as a res idential area, complete with streets, sewers, water mains and a S35.000 community cen ter building. All of the homes are duplexes ranging from one to three bedrooms. He noted that the housing is of permanent and not of wartime-type' construction. wartime - type construction last about five years, he said, and these homes are built to last 40 years. In addition they comply with all city building and fire codes. Each unit costs about $12,000, he said. In addition to financial need a minimum age limit of 60 has been set for eligibility. There is an exception in the case of disabled persons, he said, whose age can be as low as 55. He noted that prefer ence is given to veterans, oth er factors being equal. Until very recently, he says. Alcoa earnings for the lull year had been expected to at least equal the $2.52 per share earned in 1959. Boulton feels that the earn ings growth of Alcoa, and also of other major aluminum com panies leaves much to be de sired. He remains inclined to selling the stock whose pres ent price still is equal to about 40 times estimated 1960 earnings. This recommendation also applies, he says, to Kaiser and Reynolds Metals, which are affected by much the same ec onomics as those affecting the industry leader.
